Steelers Promising Rookie QB1 Kenny Pickett's First Career TD Was A Bit More Special Than Normal

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Kenny Pickett had an up-and-down rookie season, something he even admitted to Dale Lolley of Steelers.com in an interview. He provided plenty of highlights though, particularly in the two-minute drill. His back-to-back game-winning drives were quite memorable, including the throws to George Pickens and Najee Harris to win those two contests.

Pickett mentioned those two plays as being his favorite ones from his rookie season, which were obvious candidates. The first career touchdowns for players are always memorable for obvious reasons. Pickett pointed to that as one of his other favorite plays, but it hit a bit closer to home. With Lolley, he discussed why that touchdown against the New York Jets meant so much to him:

"Those two stand out the most to me. That one [two] and then I'd say my first TD. My grandfather was able to see before he passed the following week, so that was special," Pickett said in his interview with Lolley. "He always talked about being able to watch me in the NFL, so I was happy to get that one."

That was Pickett's first look in the NFL, as he relieved Mitch Trubisky at halftime of the Week 4 loss to the Jets. While the team lost, the rookie came in and brought a much-needed boost to the stagnant offense. As for his first touchdown, it was a one-yard quarterback sneak. It was set up nicely by Minkah Fitzpatrick, who returned his interception down to the one-yard line for Pickett and the offense.

Pickett would score again in that game on the ground, his second of the day. That was the start of what will hopefully be a great career for the Pittsburgh quarterback. He provided plenty of fascinating memories for black and gold fans this season, which should only continue into 2023. It seems the Pittsburgh coaching staff will take the training wheels off and give Pickett the green light in his second season. When talking with Lolley, he said he will have full command of the offense in '23.
