Steelers DT Cam Heyward is Absolutely "Looking Forward" to Getting Mike Tomlin His 2nd Super Bowl Win

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had the luxury of only having three head coaches since 1969. The Steelers are the epitome of continuity and success in the NFL, especially in today's game where teams can go through three head coaches in as little as three seasons.

The Steelers are in a transition into a "new era," but the one constant is head coach, Mike Tomlin, and he's never changed. The 2022 Steelers will have a chance because of the excellent coaching of Tomlin and his ability to get the best out of his players.

Steelers' team leader Cam Heyward sat down with Mad Dog Sports Radio with hosts Leger Douzable and Dr. Chantel Tremitiere on Friday and the topic of playing for Tomlin came up.

"Well, to the organization, he brought back a Super Bowl. Coach [Bill] Cowher retired and you think you can't go on having this much success. To have the legacy of different coaches and to bring in a guy like Coach Tomlin, who had success with Tampa Bay, was a defensive coordinator in Minnesota, that dude is a guy who's a leader of men. He pushes us, he challenges us, and we're better because of it. To me personally, he has made me who I am today. He challenges me every day and sometimes it's petty, I get competitive because of it."

Tomlin has been notorious for being able to get through to players and he just gets people.

"But there are times where I appreciate a man that continues to go about his job and continues to want to get better and always talks about getting the next chance at a sticky Lombardi," Heyward continued. "So that's a trophy I want to get for that man. Even though he's got one, it's something I'm looking forward to."

Heyward's comments go hand in hand with a famous Tomlinism, "Don't Seek Comfort." Tomlin is a successful NFL head coach with a Super Bowl championship on his resume and one day will be enshrined forever in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, he doesn't try to get by on his accomplishments, he's always pushing for continued success and has the want to get better each year.

Back in June, Tomlin sat down with The Pivot Podcast with Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor and spoke about football and life.

“I create comforts for my wife and kids, man. I just lay my head down here until it’s time to go to work the next damn day. You know what I mean? I resist comfort. I ask my guys to resist comfort, right? Guys that played for me, they can tell you, one of my sayings, I got a lot of sayings, is… ‘Don’t seek comfort.’ Seeking comfort is a natural human condition, right? We all want to be comfortable.

I realized if you’re going to have special outcomes that you got to be comfortable being uncomfortable. And so, I’ve just trained myself over the years to resist comfort and so [to] appreciate my resume is seeking comfort. You know what I mean? I get my *** whipped and I say, ‘uh, but my resume is such and such.'”

Seeking comfort is essentially creating excuses for not being able to perform appropriately. Heyward vouched for him so strongly because of that mentality that Tomlin lives by and has instilled in Steelers' players since becoming the team's head coach in 2007.
