Steelers Minkah Fitzpatrick Truly Embraces the "Don't Seek Comfort" Tomlinism

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin just went on The Pivot Podcast recently and talked about many remarkable things! When Tomlin grabs a mic, everyone just listens. What the Steelers head coach says seems to always resonate with players and carry so much weight with anyone he is speaking to. A player that embodies exactly what Tomlin wants to see and hear from a player, just got absolutely PAID!

That player is none other than Steelers superstar, All-Pro free safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick

We all know what the safety can do on the field and we know that he's a leader on this Steelers defense. He is the epitome of Pittsburgh Steelers football.

In a video released Wednesday, Fitzpatrick, along with wide receivers Chase Claypool and Miles Boykin sat down with Shaun Crawford on the Varsity House Podcast to discuss many topics.

Crawford mentions that they do a segment called "One-of-None," in which guests tell a story about one memorable moment in their careers that has resonated with them. Claypool and Boykin went first and then it was Fitzpatrick's turn. Something just clicked after listening to the man speak. What he had said relates so much to a specific "Tomlinism."

Fitzpatrick went on to say that his "One-of-None" moment was, "Deciding to go to Saint Peter's when I went to high school, combining that with also going to Alabama." Fitzpatrick says he made those decisions because they were going to be "challenges."

"They were going to be tough. They were going to be full of just unknown, you know what I'm saying? A whole lot of unknown. For like when I go to Saint Peter's, I'm traveling back and forth like an hour. Then, we lost our home to a hurricane my freshman year, a week before I started. So then, it was like 'Where am I going to be staying, where am I going to be living, who am I going to be living with, should I even still go to this school, can my parents afford that?' A whole bunch of just unknowns, and making the decision to just step into that and embrace it, you know what I'm saying?

It really, it gave me a foundation of feeling comfortable with stepping into the unknowns in life because if I didn't do that, if I didn't go to Saint Peter's, if I didn't go to Alabama, if I just did the comfortable, the easy, more welcoming route, I wouldn't be where I am today, you know what I'm saying? Because now every day, whenever there's unknown, I could just walk into it knowing that one, God's got my back and two, I've done it before.

So, I know that I might get beat up and like get bruised. I might get you know, scraped up, but at the end of the day, I'm going to be up right because I'm stepping in the path that I'm supposed to walk, even though it's unknown, it's dark and scary."

"Seeking comfort is a natural human condition, right? We all want to be comfortable. I realized if you’re going to have special outcomes that you got to be comfortable being uncomfortable." - Tomlin on The Pivot Podcast

It's eerie how much of what Fitzpatrick said aligns with Tomlin's mentality. You better believe that Fitzpatrick's massive contract extension isn't going to make him comfortable!
