Steelers Lineman Trent Scott Gets 1st-Team Reps On Friday Due To Absence Of Offensive Tackles Chukwuma Okorafor, Joe Haeg

The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line has had a difficult past few weeks. Their performance in the first two preseason games left much to be desired, causing serious concern for the offense's upside this season. Offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor received a large contract extension earlier this off-season, a bit more money than many thought he'd get. He's been part of the struggles in the preseason and on Friday, he missed practice for unknown reasons.

With veteran Joe Haeg still out with a concussion, Trent Scott played on the first team at practice according to Nick Farabaugh. Scott started 19 games in his first four NFL seasons, which were spent with the Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers. Scott seems to be on the outside looking in when it comes to making the 53-man roster. Final roster cuts come on Tuesday, as teams must be down to 53 players by then.

Behind Okorafor and Dan Moore Jr. though, the team's depth at offensive tackle is pretty minimal. Haeg, Scott, and Chaz Green are the only options behind the starters, not optimal for the team's depth there. If the team opts to keep one of those three, it'll likely come down to Haeg and Scott. Haeg likely has the upper hand due to the fact that he spent the 2021 season with the Steelers.

For Scott though, these reps at practice may just mean he starts on Sunday in the last preseason game. Facing the Detroit Lions, it could be a huge opportunity for the fifth-year lineman. If he steps in and plays well, perhaps he can play his way onto the 53-man roster. This is purely speculative on if he starts though, as Okorafor could return and get some action against the Lions. Head coach Mike Tomlin didn't announce why Okorafor missed practice on Friday, so it's unclear on if it's an injury or not.
