The Pittsburgh Steelers preseason kicks off on Saturday, as they face the Seattle Seahawks. It kickstarts the season, as football is officially back. The quarterback competition has been the must-watch aspect of camp, as it's lived up to the hype. Ben Roethlisberger's retirement forced the first QB competition in nearly 20 years in Pittsburgh.

Head coach Mike Tomlin officially named quarterback Mitch Trubisky as the starter via his short press conference on Thursday. This comes as no surprise, as that has been the case all along. The real job has been for the No. 2 job, as veteran Mason Rudolph and rookie Kenny Pickett have battled it out for that spot. Rudolph has stepped up in training camp, making him lead the second-team on Saturday evening. Pickett, who has had his fair share of ebbs and flows already, will come in near the start of the fourth quarter to run the third-team.

This news is a bit contrary to speculation from Mark Kaboly of The Athletic earlier in the week. Pickett will get a chance to continue to elevate himself as the preseason continues, but for now, he will begin on the third team.

Tomlin mentioned that the first team will be present for the first quarter. Beyond that, the second team will play the second and third quarters, with the third team finishing things up in the fourth quarter. These announcements corroborate the depth chart that was released by Tomlin and the team last week. Speaking of depth charts, Tomlin isn't exactly a fan of them

"I only provide depth charts because I have to."

It'll be interesting to finally get a firsthand look at all of these guys in real action. Throughout the press conference, Tomlin referred to how important these contests are in the preseason. While training camp and experience have been the only deciding factors on players so far, the preseason provides them with so much more.
