Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers parted ways with tight end, Christian Scotland-Williamson. Scotland-Williamson was a former professional rugby player for the Worcester Warriors of the English Rugby Union Club from 2014-2017.
He joined the Steelers in 2018 through the NFL's International Player Pathway, designed to add more international players to the league. As a benefit, the Steelers were able to carry 11 players on their practice squad instead of the normal 10 since teams received a one spot exemption for carrying an international development player.
Due to his size and athleticism, the Steelers intended to turn this 6'9 274lb rugger into an NFL tight end. Scotland-Williamson had the size and hands to compete, but had to learn how to block. From all accounts, he was improving as a player and blocker last year in training camp.
With the addition of Eric Ebron, and resigning of Vance McDonald, it would have been a difficult path for CSW to earn a roster spot this year.

It looks like the move to drop Christian Scotland Williamson coincided with a move to pick up former Chicago Bears tight end Dax Raymond. The 6'5" 252lb Raymond spent one year on the Bears roster without registering a snap. He was waived in September after being placed on Injured Reserve with a head injury. Raymond played college ball at Utah State from 2015-2017.
