No Slot Corner Listed? Steelers Leaving Buffalo Guessing

The Pittsburgh Steelers released their official regular season depth chart yesterday, and one of the only interesting things on it was that there was no starting slot corner listed.

We know almost for a fact that Cam Sutton is going to move from the outside to the slot in passing situations, but Steelers coach Mike Tomlin doesn't want to give anything away to the Buffalo Bills.

"I did that by design because we have some options there," Tomlin said.

You can say there is options because there are some, but they also aren't very good ones. Arthur Maulet will likely see a bit of playing time from the slot this weekend. He was signed for the sole purpose of playing at the slot position this offseason, but an injury and zero splash plays during the preseason games contributed to him not grabbing ahold of that spot.

New addition Ahkello Witherspoon may find some time there too, though he should find his time on the outside when Sutton moves inside.

Tomlin often likes to play the gamesmanship card. That's surely what he is doing ahead of the Steelers opening game. He wouldn't normally have the opportunity to do something like this if there wasn't the uncertainty of the spot. Sutton didn't receive a single game rep from the slot during the preseason. It won't hurt to keep Buffalo preparing for multiple looks, because they're going to be a difficult offense to stop.
