T.J. Watt in jeopardy of missing Week 1

Sunday, ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler took to SportsCenter to give an update on the contract extension situation involving Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro EDGE rusher, T.J. Watt.

"And so, if something's not done in the next, say, the next 48-to-72 hours, he's definitely going to be in jeopardy of missing Week 1 because the Steelers stay tried-and-true to guys needing to practice in order to play. He's been out there in individual drills and things like that, but they need more." - Fowler Files via SportsCenter

As mentioned in that quote, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has always been a strong advocate of players needing to practice throughout the week in order to play on game days. With just seven days until the Steelers travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills for their season opener, the team remains 'optimistic' a deal will get done shortly, but because of how complex this presumably largest deal in team history is unfolding, no specific day the deal can get done can be certain.

Watt will look to be if not the highest paid, then close to the highest paid defensive player in the league entering the 2021 NFL regular season with this potential new deal (roughly around $25M/year). Right now, he's in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to make about $10.1M.

We will keep yinz posted as this situation continues to play out. Do you think Watt will be ready by Week 1? Click to comment below!
