The 2023 NFL off-season is now in full swing. The Pittsburgh Steelers will look to build on a 9-8 season and strong finish to what started as potentially a lost cause of a year. The Kansas City Chiefs continue to celebrate after their riveting Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles and while they spent the week after parading and drinking things other than water, the dominant offense ended up losing someone who was a key piece of their successes. Eric Bieniemy, who was Andy Reid's right-hand man, will become the assistant head coach / offense coordinator for the Washington Commanders.

It is no secret that the mastermind behind the Chiefs' offensive juggernaut has always been Reid and it was inevitable that Bieniemy would leave to run his own show at some point. It seems as if Pittsburgh has certainly committed to Matt Canada for at least one more season, but it's easy to guess who fans would probably have.
Bieniemy is going to be a head coach in the NFL one day. Reid has built a staff around him in Kansas City that has won two Super Bowls in four years and overall, his coaching tree is one of the best of all time with names like Sean McDermott, John Harbaugh, Doug Pederson, Ron Rivera, Todd Bowles, among others.
What about the other team in the big game? The Eagles lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching jobs just days after the crushing defeat. Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen will lead the Indianapolis Colts, while defensive play-caller, Jonathan Gannon will be the top guy for the Arizona Cardinals. Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin needs to take some notes.

Steelers' Tomlin Has A Serious Coaching Tree Problem That Speaks Volumes
The lack of a coaching tree for Tomlin has been blasted for many years. Conservative hires at key openings paired with his seemingly need to control all facets of the game are tied into the team only winning three playoff games in over a decade. Sure, Brian Flores just got a defensive coordinator gig, but it's not like Tomlin molded him into a top candidate; he was already one in the first place.
Bruce Arians is the only person who was once under Tomlin and became not just a head coach, but went on to win a Super Bowl as well. The kicker is he was hired by Bill Cowher back in 2004 as a wide receivers coach, not Tomlin. The pressing issue that is and has been surrounding the organization is as intelligent and masterful as Tomlin is, there aren't enough elite football minds in the Steelers' offices.
All four teams in the AFC and NFC Championships game had offensive-minded head coaches with support all around. The structure within the Steelers' coaching staff under Tomlin, especially recently, has not been built to win in today's NFL.

Not many more changes are expected to be made going forward in 2023 (at least, probably not?), but following the scramble from other teams to try and land three of four coordinators who coached in the Super Bowl, it should have Tomlin taking a peak in the mirror and evaluating his incapability to surround himself with alike or even brighter minds than himself.
He can't do it alone to be highly competitive with the dominant forces in the AFC and while not much is going to change the next 10 months or so, another season with a non-playoff win due to a lack of creativity and explosiveness on both sides of the ball should have been looking outside the organization and his comfort zone to drastically alter the staff around him.
