The Steelers signed Nate Herbig to a two-year, $8 million deal to start free agency.

He was originally signed by the Philadelphia Eagles where his path crossed with now Steelers Assistant GM, Andy Weidl. Herbig was an undrafted free agent when he was selected in 2019. He started five games in 2021 and has shown a lot of promise.

One of his best features is that he can play both guard positions. It seems likely he will be competing for the left guard spot. He will definitely have a shot against Kevin Dotson. Herbig said he has built his career off of opportunity and he looks forward to being able to continue that.

Now Herbig's old friend from Philly, Weidl, has helped bring him to Pittsburgh on a two-year deal worth $8 million. Herbig had this to say about Weidl:

"Andy Weidl is the GOAT man. He's the man. He was in Philly when I was in Philly. Kinda had that connection coming here a little bit. Just happy to be here. Just happy to be in the same building as him."

There is no disputing that Herbig is excited to be in Pittsburgh. He expressed that multiple times and is sure to be a fan favorite with his affable manner. He presents as a gentle giant with a positive and upbeat personality:

"I love football. I love the game of football. And I am happy to be here, old-school, smash-mouth. I like that stuff, as you can see, I was built for it. So I'm happy to be here."

When asked if he has a preference for playing left or right guard, Herbig had this to say:

"Man, I'd play punter if they want me to. I'll play whatever coach tells me to play."

Brooke Pryor asked him what it is about the Steelers that make this a good fit:

"It's the Steelers! What isn't there about it? I don't have enough to say. The guys on the team have already reached out to me. Kenny [Pickett] reached out to me, just shows his leadership already. Just happy to be a part of this team."

He has a few other connections to Pittsburgh besides Weidl. Herbig is a native of Hawaii and played at the same high school, St. Louis, as former Steelers nose tackle, Tyson Alulu. He went to college at Stanford and talked about watching David DeCastro play for the Steelers when he was there. Called both former players "absolute studs."

To close out, Herbig had this to say:

"Studs everywhere, I think they are really building something here. They've been good for a long time. Coach Tomlin is an unbelieveable head coach. Hopefully, I can add."

Steeler Nation welcomes you, Nate Herbig! Glad to have you join the family.
