The Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain is entering the latter part of his football career. Cam Heyward is 33 years old and depending on how the season starts may briefly be the Steelers’ all-time leader in sacks. TJ Watt is hot on his heels and it is just a matter of when, not if he takes over the lead for the Steelers. The defense and Pittsburgh are better for having him in black and gold for the last decade.

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captains, TJ Watt (#90) and Cameron Heyward (#97) participate during 2022 training camp in Latrobe, PA.
93.7 The Fan sponsored the Fourth Annual Giant Eagle Feed The Need 2023, which is a telethon-style food drive to address community members who are facing food insecurity. The successful effort is rumored to have raised enough money for over 300,000 meals with its most recent effort.
Heyward has a tremendous reputation in the NFL as a leader in giving back to the community. He has been nominated for the Walter Payton Man of The Year Award five times, but he has never taken home the trophy. Heyward joined Joe Kirksey and Chris Mueller who was filling in for the vacationing Ron Cook on what is normally The Cook & Joe Show to discuss where he got his unquenchable thirst for helping the city of Pittsburgh and its residents.
“I think my parents always instilled in me to help everybody out,” Heyward began. “When you are in a position that you are blessed, God didn’t just do it out of kindness it’s to help others. I have always been fortunate to help others and I am going to continue to do it.”
Cam Heyward Honors His Friend Franco Harris With Emotional Tribute
The Steelers defensive captain is very humble and with the unfortunate passing of his friend Franco Harris in December is filling a necessary void left behind by the Steelers legend who had his number retired on Christmas Eve. The Steelers icon made his last public appearance on Heyward’s podcast shortly before his death and it is somehow fitting that these two men dedicated to giving back were together so near the end.

Heyward called in to lend support and to highlight the Cameron Heyward Foundation’s Suiting Up for Success Soiree. The Craig’s Closet program partnered with Surmesur Custom Menswear and Macy’s to provide suits for the Annual Suiting Up For Success Soiree to recognize male high school seniors selected by local guidance counselors to be recognized for their accomplishments.
“This is our main thing right now,” Heyward said. “We have been doing Craig’s Closet for a couple of years and we are seeing the fruit of that. This will be the second year of suits for success, and we have a couple of kids who participated last year talk about what all we have been able to accomplish. We get different people who are looking to hire, and we get them to explain how they got involved. The more you provide for a kid, the more you can make a difference in his life.”
When a young man is selected for the program, he is fitted with a custom suit from Surmesur and provided with footwear from the Macy’s department store. The program gives outstanding young men an opportunity to mingle with potential employers and provides them the confidence to thrive in social settings. This is the second year of the program and Heyward started it in remembrance of his father Craig “Ironhead” Heyward.

“My dad had one suit growing up,” Heyward is quoted on his website. “It was his dream to provide suits for others so they can look good, play good and feel good. That’s what we are here to do.”
Heyward’s foundation is involved in several charitable functions in the community, and you can learn more at the Cameron Heyward Foundation website here. The Steelers defensive captain is looking for a successful season in 2023. He already has a successful role in the community that will extend far beyond football in the future.
