The Pittsburgh Steelers have done a terrific job addressing several key needs all over the field throughout the 2023 offseason. There are definitely a few question marks on the depth chart, but with many options still out there and the NFL Draft quickly approaching, the roster will be well-rounded come summertime. One position that is still up in the air is at quarterback. Kenny Pickett will attempt to build off of a strong ending to 2022 and Mitch Trubisky seems like he is going to be around for at least another year, but what about the third-string spot?

The most likely scenario is bringing in an inexpensive option through the draft. There are a number of signal-callers who are projecting to be available in the seventh round. Pittsburgh is showing interest as well. Former University of Houston quarterback, Clayton Tune is reportedly set for a pre-draft visit.

The team is only allowed 30 of these and Tune, as of now, is the only potential third-string quarterback who is meeting with the Steelers in Pittsburgh. So, with a signing in free agency out of the question and mild intrigue when it comes to the draft, could there be any other plans regarding Pickett and Trubisky's backup?

Steelers Need To Have A (Or Another) Conversation With Mason Rudolph

Let's start out by understanding that it is absolutely possible Rudolph wants nothing to do with a one-year deal in Pittsburgh. He is good enough to at least be active on game days. He may even be able to find a situation out there where he competes for a starting job, but it's hard to deny his free agency period has been extremely quiet.

If Rudolph specifically told the Steelers he is done with the organization, which has been reported multiple times, then it makes sense as to why the franchise wouldn't try and bring him back. But, given what seems to be a lack of options for Rudolph, he might be wise to take back those feelings.

From the team's standpoint, the chances of a seventh round quarterback turning into Brock Purdy are not likely. The better move is to do what they can to re-sign Rudolph. He knows the playbook, is familiar with the organization and is a veteran guy who has been around a future Hall of Famer in Ben Roethlisberger.

If the goal for Pickett's second year is to develop and improve as much as possible, how is a rookie quarterback with no experience going to help him? It's important to look at this from an unbiased view if you're a fan. Many are happy to see Rudolph is almost certain not to be back, but as far as what's best for the team, it sure does make sense to try and get him to come back.

This reunion isn't likely to happen, but it would be a smart move for the Steelers to reach back out if he hasn't been getting much traction elsewhere. Having two veteran quarterbacks around Pickett in his second season is far more valuable than a rookie who has no professional experience.
