With Pittsburgh Steelers' backup quarterback Mason Rudolph looking to most likely not come back, it is time to look at new options to fill the hole. The possibility of going out and getting a potential backup through free agency is an option. Bringing back Rudolph could even come into play. But from what it is starting to look like, the Steelers will probably be going with the draft to secure their guy.

Quarterback Mason Rudolph will be leaving the Steelers via free agency after four years with the team.

Scheduled meeting with the Steelers

One of the potential draft picks that we could see go to the Steelers is Clayton Tune from Houston. It was reported recently by Ian Rapoport that he had a scheduled meeting with the Steelers. This could lead them to get Tune who could be the perfect option to fill the hole and be the number two or three quarterback.

Quarterback Clayton Tune had an impressive 2022 season, but projects as more of project at the NFL level.

Tune is a very experienced player and seems like a solid overall prospect. He doesn't have the flashiness of the likes of Anthony Richardson, but has the potential to be a solid player in the league. Looking into Tune, I took a look at CBS's current draft profile on him, and this is what they had to say:

"Clayton Tune is an experienced pocket passer with quality skill set across the board and quality athleticism. He doesn't quite play to the athleticism he demonstrated at the combine, but has plenty of impressive, balanced, decently explosive designed runs and scrambles on film -- very useful as extra element to the offense and when ad-libbing."

This speaks testimony to what I mentioned that he has the potential to be a solid player in the league, I think that he needs to learn how to use his athleticism while playing the game. One of the things worth mentioning about him is his potential when throwing the ball. He can make big plays at times and shows flashes of being an all-star caliber quarterback in the league, but is not consistent. For a little more on that, CBS had this to say about it:

"Arm is good for NFL standards, not great and surprisingly not much arm talent. If he's on the run or off base in the pocket, his arm strength dips below normal pro standards. His downfield touch needs work, as does his overall pocket presence, although in the latter area he has rare flashes of awesome pocket drifting. He showed ability to move defenders with his eyes, but not consistent in that area. He has the propensity to rip it through tight windows at intermediate level. He has lots of high-caliber, challenging throws on film and can throw with precision with anticipation."

University of Houston quarterback Clayton Tune could be a nice late round pick up for the Steelers.

Overall, when addressing the film, I think the best way of addressing him is that he could be a project, that if works out could be huge for the Steelers. His position if drafted by the Steelers could be something like Matt Hasselbeck when he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1998. Hasselbeck knew he would never get the shot to start with Brett Favre there, but would go on to have a solid career and even get to compete against the Steelers in Super Bowl XL as the starter with the Seattle Seahawks.

Matt Hasselbeck is taken down by Deshea Townsend in the fourth quarter.

So, what do you think Steeler Nation? Do you see them going with Tune late in the draft? Is there another QB you would want? Let me know in the comments below!
