The Steelers Re-negotiate Mitch Trubisky's Contract
Trubisky, who joined the Steelers on a two-year contract prior to the 2022 season as a free agent, was just signed to an extension. This two-year deal helps cut the cap hit the Steelers take for keeping him. The details of the deal were released Friday by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Trubisky will now earn $19.65 million over the three years of his contract. Of that, $8 million is guaranteed, which includes $6.92 million in the form of a signing bonus and $1.08 million is the veteran minimum salary in 2023.
This significantly helps the Steelers because it reduces the salary cap hit which was originally $10.625 million to only $4.6 million, while still allowing Trubisky to earn the same amount he was going to on his old contract.
The Steelers Re-signed Mason Rudolph
The details are also out on the new contract for Rudolph. Rudolph, who has been with the Steelers since being drafted in 2018, was the third-string quarterback last season. All signs were pointing towards Rudolph leaving Pittsburgh as he was hoping for an opportunity that might give him some playing time. However, the Steelers announced quite unexpectedly that they had come to an agreement and Rudolph is staying put.
His one-year contract is worth $1.08 million.

These Deals Are Good News For The Steelers
According to Dulac, these deals make sense in a number of ways, but most importantly, it gives the Steelers the best quarterback room since 2012 when Byron Leftwich and Charlie Batch were the backups for Ben Roethlisberger.
The most important component is that the Steelers now have a steady and reliable backup quarterback in Trubisky. Kenny Pickett suffered from two concussions last season. While you hope that doesn't happen again, you have to be prepared.
At the end of the 2022 season, many fans were thinking they had seen the last of Trubisky and Rudolph. However, the organization made it clear from the start that they wanted to keep Trubisky. The quarterback room has developed a tight and supportive bond.
When Trubisky lost the starting job to Pickett in Week 4, he could have been bitter and uncooperative with the rookie. But he was not, instead, he continued to try and support and mentor him through the entire season. The Steelers consider him such a strong leader, he was named as a team captain.

Trubisky also showed that he was ready if he was needed. When Pickett suffered those concussions, Trubisky was game ready to take his place. In fact, those games - Baltimore, Carolina, and Tampa Bay - gave the Steelers the best quarterback play of the season. Trubisky completed 48 out of 64 passes for 599 yards, 75%, and 2 touchdowns. His passer rating for those games was 94.7. He did throw three interceptions, but all were against Baltimore.
Pickett, who is going into his second year, has three more seasons left on his rookie contract. They can breathe a sigh of relief for now, but as they head into 2026, they will need to replace all three.
