Steelers Already Showing Their Hand At Who Will Play Slot Cornerback

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a number of big-time moves this offseason in adding to the team's defense. Whether it be the additions of Cole Holcomb, Elandon Roberts and Nick Herbig to the linebacker group or Joey Porter Jr., and Cory Trice Jr. to the defensive back room, the unit will likely be much improved from 2022. With that being said, the losses of Cam Sutton and Arthur Maulet create a massive hole at slot corner for the Steelers going into 2023.

Former Steelers CB, Cam Sutton Showed His Versatility During His Time In Pittsburgh

While the team brought in veteran free agent Chandon Sullivan to occupy part of this role, the coaching staff may ultimately turn to another free agent signing to fulfill a majority of the responsibilities, former Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson. During his illustrious 12-year NFL career, Peterson has almost exclusively played outside the numbers. However, the former Pro Bowler may see a much different role with the Steelers in 2023. During a recent interview following the team's OTAs, Peterson discussed his comfort with playing in the slot.

β€œTo me, I feel like the inside guy is the most protected. You're closer to the linebacker, you've got a middle-field safety, so you're basically just playing to your leverage and just funneling the receiver to where you’re not covering. So, for the most part, just understand where your help is. For me, it gives me the ability to play even slower than on the outside," Peterson said.

Having Peterson Play Slot Corner May Be Ideal For The Steelers In 2023

While some may view Peterson shifting inside to play nickel corner to be a demotion, it is important to keep in mind that he will likely still serve as one of the team's starting outside cornerbacks in base defensive formations. Even at age 32, he is still a tremendously talented defensive back who is highly intelligent and has a knack for turning the ball over. Furthermore, having Peterson play in the slot will allow the team to have both Porter Jr. as well as Levi Wallace to be on the field together at the same time. Needless to say, this trio is the best group of corners the Steelers have.

At this point in Peterson's career, there is little more to achieve in terms of individual accomplishments. His resume will make him a legitimate Hall of Fame candidate once he decides to retire. However, the most glaring absence of his career is the lack of team success, as he has yet to win a Super Bowl with either the Arizona Cardinals or Minnesota Vikings. While the Steelers may be considered to be a bit of a long shot to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in 2023, this is perhaps Peterson's best chance to reach the pinnacle in quite some time.

By already showing his willingness to do whatever it takes to help the team win, Peterson could perhaps be the most integral member of the defensive back room this upcoming season. His versatility in playing multiple positions, in addition to his strong leadership abilities, will lend well to the team's defense in 2023. He will undoubtedly be called upon to be both a highly effective player as well as a mentor for both Porter and Trice this upcoming season.

Final Thoughts On The Steelers Defensive Back Room In 2023

The 2023 Steelers' defensive backs are perhaps the most talented group of players the team has had in quite some time. With veteran leadership in the form of Peterson and Minkah Fitzpatrick, along with young talent in Porter and Trice, the unit has the ability to help the defense achieve great success this upcoming season.

Furthermore, there seems to be a collective mindset amongst the group that each player is willing to accept whatever role the coaching staff asks of them, as nearly every player in the positional group will be asked to play a number of different roles for the defense this upcoming season. While many outside of the Steelers' organization may see Peterson's move to slot corner to be a demotion, there is no denying that the team still has high expectations for the future Hall of Famer in 2023. He is expected to do much more than help the young corners develop, he will be counted upon to be the glue that holds together the team's defense.

How do Yinz feel about Peterson playing in the slot in 2023? Do you feel as if the defensive back room is in good shape heading into 2023? Be sure to let us know in the comments!
