Another day and another big-time achievement for Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker TJ Watt. Wheaties is excited to reveal that professional football athletes and legendary brothers J.J. and T.J. Watt will be on the next Wheaties box cover! As the first-ever brother duo to be featured in Wheaties history, and first two athletes to be featured on a box together since 1934, J.J. and T.J. are known for their professional football careers as well as their commitment to community – making them true Wheaties Champions.

J.J. Watt, former Arizona Cardinal, and Houston Texans #1 Overall Draft Pick, and current Pittsburgh Steeler star T.J. Watt join a prestigious list of athletes to grace a Wheaties box, including Simone Biles (2022), Michael Jordan (2021) and Lebron James (2020).

Not only do these brothers dominate on the field, but they are also pillars in their communities—from working to provide opportunities for children and young athletes through the Justin J. Watt Foundation, to both brother’s contributions with the Make-A-Wish foundation. In celebration of the new box, Wheaties is donating $100,000 to the Justin J. Watt Foundation to help in its work of creating safe, after-school athletic opportunities for middle schoolers.

The Watt brothers limited-edition Wheaties Box, which also features J.J. and T.J.’s brother Derek Watt on the back, will be available at major retailers nationwide in early August for $6.19.

Former Steelers Also Were On The Cover Of Wheaties

TJ isn't the first Steelers player to be featured on the front of a Wheaties box. In honor of the Immaculate Reception, Franco Harris graced the cover once. Multiple members from the 1992 AFC Central Division Champion Steelers were also featured on the cover of Wheaties.

Shortly after the 1992 Steelers were on the cover the 1995 AFC Conference Champion Steelers were featured on the cover. There was also a cover with the likeness of Mean Joe Greene, and another that featured Hall of Fame quarterbacks Bart Starr, Roger Staubach, and legendary Steelers icon Terry Bradshaw

In 1934, the breakfast cereal Wheaties began the practice of including pictures of athletes on its packaging to coincide with its slogan, "The Breakfast of Champions." In its original form, athletes were depicted on the sides or back of the cereal box, though in 1958 Wheaties began placing the pictures on the front. New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig was the first player to ever appear on the box in 1934. In 1958 Bob Richards was the first athlete to appear on the front cover. Richards was an Olympic track star.

Other Famous Covers

Wheaties, the iconic breakfast cereal known for featuring prominent athletes on its cover boxes, has a long-standing tradition of honoring successful and inspirational sports figures. For decades, Wheaties has chosen individuals who exemplify exceptional athletic prowess, discipline, and serve as role models for aspiring athletes and fans alike. These cover athletes have left an indelible mark on their respective sports and have become synonymous with the Wheaties brand.

One of the most memorable Wheaties cover athletes is Michael Jordan, the legendary basketball player who dominated the NBA throughout the 1990s. Jordan's image on the Wheaties box symbolized his unparalleled skill, fierce competitiveness, and his status as a global sports icon. His partnership with Wheaties not only boosted the cereal's popularity but also solidified his place in sports history.

Another iconic Wheaties cover athlete is Mary Lou Retton, an American gymnast who captured the hearts of millions during the 1984 Summer Olympics. Retton's infectious smile, determination, and incredible performance, which earned her a gold medal in the all-around competition, made her a natural choice for the Wheaties box. Her inclusion showcased the growing popularity and recognition of gymnastics as a sport, inspiring generations of young athletes.

In 2004, Wheaties featured Serena Williams, one of the most dominant tennis players of all time, on its cover. Williams' powerful presence, unmatched skill, and numerous Grand Slam titles solidified her status as an extraordinary athlete. As a Wheaties cover athlete, she represented resilience, dedication, and the importance of breaking barriers in sports, especially as a Black woman in a predominantly white sport.
