The Pittsburgh Steelers are a little more than one year removed from tragedy. In the spring of 2022, Dwayne Haskins Jr. was killed in a tragic accident on Florida Highway 595 near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Haskins was only 24 years old and left behind a young widow in Kalabrya Haskins. His passing shocked the NFL world.

The Steelers had given Haskins a new lease on NFL life, and he was expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during the 2022 preseason. Sadly, he never got the chance. The details surrounding Haskins's death have been, at best unclear. It was a rather undisclosed tragedy in terms of the details. More information is slowly coming to light.
It is a fact that he was struck by what was described as a dump truck as Haskins was attempting to cross the highway on foot. His blood alcohol limit was measured at .20, nearly two and a half times the legal limit in Florida. The details get very murky after that.

Haskins' widow has reached a settlement with the truck broker, owner, and driver, according to her attorney, Rick Ellsley. The three parties are just a portion of the civil suit that was filed in March of 2023. The lawsuit names 14 defendants in total. No details of the settlement have been released.
Among the claims put forth in the lawsuit is an assertion that Haskins was targeted and drugged. It also alleges a blackmail and robbery conspiracy before his death. According to popular sports social media personality, Dov Kleiman, per the Associated Press, he was victimized by as many as four individuals before the mechanical failure that prompted him to seek assistance on foot.

The settlement with the trucking company, while undisclosed, hopefully, will bring some solace to the family. It is unfathomable to lose a husband and a son before his life really even started. Haskins had his whole life in front of him. According to teammates, the young quarterback was well-liked by his Steelers peers. Who knows what kind of legacy he would have left on this world, and if it even would have involved football?

The former Steelers quarterback was also in the news recently when Colin Cowherd made a mockery of his memory on national television. In a poorly thought out segment, Cowherd and his team claim to have unintentionally named the late quarterback as incapable of winning a Super Bowl. Error or not, it was a poorly conceived segment and a hurtful sentiment to fans and surely his surviving friends and family.

Haskins' lawsuit against the remaining 11 defendants will continue to proceed in the state of Florida. Criminal charges stemming from the alleged robbery, extortion, and drugging of Haskins have not been filed at this time. This is a developing story that surely will involve more details in the coming months.
