The Pittsburgh Steelers season began with a loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the disappointment, the season is not over. The Steelers have 16 games left on the schedule and are preparing to play the Cleveland Browns. Pittsburgh’s embattled offensive coordinator addressed the media Thursday and tried to instill calm with his answers about the Steelers’ offensive performance in Week 1.

Steelers OC, Matt Canada has Pittsburgh in a vicious cycle.
After listening to what he had to say, there is only one conclusion. Mission not accomplished. Canada can not get out of his own way. He may not be able to coordinate an NFL offense, but Canada is a master at inserting his foot into his mouth. Thursday's meeting with the press was no exception.
“In that room, we talked about it. What was good, what was bad,” Canada said. “How this should have worked and everybody has great accountability and ownership for it. We all just have to be better. A play here or there, and it is a different game. That game got away so fast. We didn’t get to run the plays we wanted to run or do the things we wanted to do by our own fault. We own that.”
The PM Team w/Poni & Mueller's hosts did not receive the comments well. Andrew Fillipponi and Chris Mueller took turns bashing the third-year coach. The pair have been highly critical of Canada, and Thursday afternoon was no exception.
“This is a segment called Canada’s Calls, and shockingly, it doesn’t have a sponsor,” Fillipponi spouted. “No company wants to put its name next to poor Matt Canada’s name right now.”
“Not even Canada Dry Ginger Ale," Mueller replied. "Which is what his play-calling is."
It is a funny line, but it exposes a harsh reality. The members of Steeler Nation and the city of Pittsburgh are over Canada. He is the worst kind of marriage between incompetence and arrogance. The Steelers offense has been ineffective for the 36 games that Canada has been a coordinator. Social media was on fire this week, highlighting the failed coordinator's dismal resume.

The offense has failed to produce over 20 points in regulation in 27 of those 36 games.
Josh Rowntree covers the Steelers for 93.7 The Fan and has had a front-row seat for the downward spiral of the Steelers offense. His social media post triggered an avalanche of responses. Fans are fed up, and Art Rooney II and Mike Tomlin should start paying attention.

Canada has now been inept with a Hall of Fame quarterback that he potentially sabotaged with horrific play-calling in Ben Roethlisberger. He was a disaster for Mitch Trubisky, who, in retrospect, may not have gotten a fair shot to perform in Pittsburgh under the offensive coordinator. Now he is failing with the Steelers 2022 first-round draft pick, Kenny Pickett, who has had his most effective moments off Canada's terrible script.

Canada's ridiculous comments about not calling the plays he wanted to call are simply unbelievable. He is the offensive coordinator and the play-caller for the Steelers offense. The repeated three-and-outs in the first half were presumably what he thought were his best plays.
"I had all these jet sweeps," Mueller joked about Canada's answers. "We had not yet begun to jet sweep. I had a go-ball with a 5% completion likelihood for George Pickens ready to go that you would have not believed. I tried to fool the best defense in the league by calling all my bad plays first."
Steelers President Art Rooney II Detailed The 2 Reasons For Keeping Matt Canada
This was all so unavoidable. Rooney toed the company line about wanting to preserve continuity for Pickett as the reason to retain the offensive coordinator after last season. The owner and the coach owe it to an angry fan base to explain where the continuity line of thinking came from. It was an unconvincing argument after the season ended, and it is utter bull puckey at his point.

Canada's retention was either Tomlin stubbornly holding onto a failed coordinator or ownership demanding he finish his contract so they would only pay one coach for one job. Congratulations, whichever is true, season ticket holders are selling their tickets to the opposing team's fans for home games. The Steelers faithful is disgusted, and the home crowd is beginning to reflect it.
Pittsburgh has had a rabid fan base that has been rewarded with just seven losing seasons since 1970 and six Lombardi Trophies. The organization built a tremendous reservoir of goodwill with a loyal fan base. It has taken three short years of offensive ineptitude to begin eroding support. Who will channel Dan Rooney and pull the team back from the brink this time? Whoever that is, they better do it fast while there is still a Steeler Way to save.
What do you think, Steeler Nation? Does someone in leadership need to step up and explain who exactly lobbied for Canada to keep his job? Let me know what you think. Please comment below or on my Twitter/X: @thebubbasq.
