The Pittsburgh Steelers released cornerback Kalon Barnes from the practice squad this week. Sporting an impressive 4.23-second 40-yard dash time, his exceptional speed has always been a standout attribute since his rookie season back in 2022. However, despite this remarkable talent, Barnes has found himself traversing through various teams within the league. Unfortunately, his tenure with the Steelers was rather brief, as he lasted only a mere 11 days.

In a receiver room that was previously filled with talent and depth, the recent absence of Diontae Johnson will last at least until after the team's Week 6 bye. Furthermore, Gunner Olszewski, who suffered a concussion last week, also faced challenges in his performance during the limited number of snaps he was granted on the field. The Steelers currently have some healthy starting wide receivers, including Allen Robinson II, Calvin Austin III and George Pickens, who are beneficial for the team's offense. However, the Steelers have evaluated a potential player who could provide assistance to them this season.

Johnson's position could potentially be filled by former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver, James Proche. The Steelers worked out Proche, who was selected by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The year 2021 proved to be his most successful season in the league, as he accumulated a total of 202 receiving yards. In his overall career, Proche has managed to secure 25 receptions, resulting in a cumulative yardage of 278. After being released by the Ravens in 2023, Proche is now seeking to join another team in the league.

Despite not having monumental statistics in the past, what might catch the attention of the Steelers is Proche's background as a punt and kick return specialist, having accumulated a total of 244 yards on 29 returns. Proche's remarkable performance as a college receiver is what truly sets him apart from others as well. During his senior season at Southern Methodist University, Proche exhibited an exceptional level of skill, amassing 111 receptions for a staggering 1,225 yards and 15 touchdowns. These numbers alone are a testament to his unrivaled talent and ability to dominate on the field. Moreover, when considering his entire four-year tenure in the NCAA, Proche's overall statistics are nothing short of admirable, with a total of 301 receptions, just under 4,000 yards, and 39 touchdowns.

Former Raven James Proche Speculated to Join Steelers Roster

James Proche II returns to practice on Wednesday in the final preseason game of 2021.

In September of 2020, Proche made his NFL debut during the season opener against the Cleveland Browns and returned two punts for a total of 26 yards. During Week 11, Proche had a significant moment when he caught his first pass of the season, resulting in a 14-yard gain. During this game, the team faced a 24-30 overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans, but Proche's performance demonstrated his potential as a valuable asset to the team. Towards the end of the year, Proche faced a setback as he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list by the team. However, showing resilience and determination, he was activated just three days later, ready to continue contributing to the team's success.

Throughout his three seasons with Baltimore, Proche managed to complete 27 punt returns, amounting to a total of 222 yards. His longest return during this period was 20 yards and he displayed his receiving skills by making 25 receptions, accumulating a total of 278 yards. Despite his contributions on the field, the talented player has yet to score a touchdown in the NFL.
