Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson recently sat down for an interview with members of the Jaguars' media team. The discussion naturally veered toward the upcoming matchup with the Steelers and, in particular, the standout wide receiver, George Pickens. This second-year receiver has burst onto the scene this season, delivering some of the most remarkable and thrilling plays in the most critical moments for the Steelers.
When Pederson was asked whether the Jaguars had considered selecting Pickens in the draft and to share his thoughts on the talented wide receiver, he provided insightful and commendable remarks about Pickens' skills and contributions to the Steelers.
“Yeah, we took a hard look at him and all the guys in the draft.”
Pederson began by acknowledging that the Jaguars had indeed given a thorough evaluation to Pickens and all the prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft. He went on to commend Pickens, recognizing him as a dominant player who possesses exceptional athleticism. According to Pederson, Pickens is not only big and athletic, but also possesses impressive speed and hands, making him a well-rounded receiver.

Steelers' George Pickens Can Do It All
One of the remarkable statistics that Pederson highlighted was Pickens' impressive average of approximately 18.5 yards per reception. This statistic underscores Pickens' ability to create big plays and stretch the field for the Steelers offense.
"He is a good player. He’s a dominant player, he’s big and athletic, he runs well and catches the ball, he can highpoint. I think he’s about 18.5 yards per attempt, he’s had three 100-yard games this year already."
Pederson also pointed out Pickens' three 100-yard games this season, a testament to his consistency and ability to make significant contributions in crucial games.
One aspect of Pickens' game that Pederson emphasized was his versatility. He noted that Pickens can excel in a variety of roles. Whether it's executing a back-shoulder fade, running past defenders to catch deep passes, or running precise slant routes, Pickens has demonstrated a wide-ranging skill set. Pederson's evaluation also extended to Pickens' blocking ability, highlighting his commitment to contributing to the team's success in multiple facets of the game.
"There’s not a lot he really can’t do, and he blocks well. He’s playing at a high level for them and the quarterback is very comfortable with him.”
Perhaps one of the most notable aspects of Pederson's assessment was his recognition of the strong connection between Pickens and the Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett. Pickens and Pickett were both selected in the same draft class in 2022.
