Steelers' Jaylen Warren Delivers The Hard Truth On Matt Canada

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense did not execute a perfect game plan in their 16-10 Week 12 win over their divisional rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals; however, they looked more efficient than anyone has seen in, quite literally, years. The Steelers managed to break 400 yards in total offense for the first time since 2020. What changed between the humiliating Week 11 loss and the win against the Bengals? The firing of Offensive Coordinator, Matt Canada

The Steelers fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada after the crushing loss to the Cleveland Browns Week 11.

While everyone from the media, fans, and even former players was calling for Canada's head, there were many who were skeptical that it would happen during the season. But the organization clearly recognized, as frustrations boiled over with players, that a change had to be made. A current player, running back, Jaylen Warren, has acknowledged that the change was just what they needed.

Under Canada in 2023, the Steelers had not out-gained a single opponent despite being 6-4 heading into the Bengals game. Quarterback, Kenny Pickett looked much better. He was able to connect with several receivers including Diontae Johnson, George Pickens, and Calvin Austin III. While he hit eight different teammates, his top choice was tight end, Pat Freiermuth. Freiermuth had nine receptions for 120 yards. Overall, Pickett went 24 of 33 pass attempts for 278 yards.

According to 93.7 The Fan, Warren told the media after the game the hard truth about life without Canada. Warren implied that it ran smoother with new co-coordinators Mike Sullivan and Eddie Faulkner calling the shots.

"More communication and more, I don't know how to say this without being too explicit, but more willingness to take shots. Taking more risks," admitted Warren.

Warren had a solid performance, running 13 times for 49 yards with three receptions for another 13 yards as well. The running back tandem of Warren and Najee Harris once again proved successful. Harris ran 15 times for 99 yards and one touchdown. Harris seemed to flourish under the new offensive plan, having a long run of 22 yards, and could be seen dragging multiple defenders behind more than once.

Steelers Offense Found A New Balanced Identity

The Steelers did not jump out to a lead early in the game as they were trailing the Bengals at halftime, 7-3. It seemed like it was going to be more of the same once the third quarter began, but Pittsburgh's Trenton Thompson picked off Bengals backup quarterback, Jake Browning. That sparked a 79-yard drive that resulted in Harris's touchdown.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton (21) tackles Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren (30) in the first quarter of a Week 12 NFL football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at Paycor Stadium.

One of the biggest differences in the Steelers' offensive modus operandi against the Bengals was the way they seemed to find the balance they had been missing. They had exactly the same number of passes and rushes with 33 of each. The game marked the return of the middle of the field (an area previously ignored by Canada) as well as the resurgence of big plays. Pittsburgh had six plays of at least 20 yards against Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh's defense wasn't flawless either, but they were able to make Browning uncomfortable all day. He was sacked four times, twice by edge rusher, TJ Watt. Watt has found himself in some elite company as one of only two players in NFL history (the other being Reggie White) to amass 90 sacks in their first 100 games.

While there is still work to be done, the offense showed fans that Pittsburgh has something it can build upon without Canada. Perhaps firing Canada gave the players the spark they needed to ignite that passion you need to win games.
