The Pittsburgh Steelers had an interesting path to the NFL playoffs in 2023, but nonetheless, found a way to slip in as the AFC's seventh seed. Their reward? A trip to face the Buffalo Bills in cold and windy weather. That's the kind of January football both franchises are used to playing, but it actually may favor a run-heavy Steelers' offense led by Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. It will be an extremely hostile environment, but Steeler Nation travels better than any fan base in the NFL, so Terrible Towels are expected to be waving at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back, Najee Harris (#22) smiles as he participates in warmups prior to a 2023 training camp practice in Latrobe, PA.

As the Steelers' opponent was finalized, a local radio personality, Adam Crowley, implored all of Pittsburgh to boycott Buffalo's precious chicken wings until after the game on Sunday.

It actually began to catch on and a loyal fan base was ready to not go anywhere near one of the best foods to eat on a football Sunday. Crowley and his co-host on The Fan Morning Show, Dorin Dickerson, welcomed Bills' beat writer, Sal Capaccio to the show on Wednesday morning. Capaccio apparently hasn't heard of the Terrible Towel curse because he went right after Myron Cope's prized possession in response to the buffalo wing boycott.

"You know what I think? A towel is just a towel. I don't care."

Crowley and Dickerson immediately warned him about the strange occurrences that have happened after someone disrespects the most unique tradition in all of sports. He got a bit defensive and backtracked.

"I'm not grabbing the towel. I'm not doing anything with it, you know? Hey, you have your thing, but if you're going to come at the chicken wings, I gotta come at the towel or something."

For starters, no one has ever seen Bills Mafia waving around chicken wings after big plays and during crucial moments. Comparing the two is a bit of stretch if you ask the typical Yinzer.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans wave their Terrible Towels aggressively as Styx's famous song, Renegade, plays during a home game at then-Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA.

Crowley acknowledged Capaccio's defense, but wanted to let Steelers fans know that he still made a bad mistake. No slander of the Terrible Towel will be tolerated on the show.

"He symbolically stepped on the towel," Crowley said.

Most recently, the Jacksonville Jaguars felt the curse of the Terrible Towel in full force. When Pittsburgh and Jacksonville played earlier in 2023, Andrew Wingard intercepted a pass and stole a Terrible Towel from a fan. He immediately started waving it around. The Jaguars finished the season losing six out of nine games and missed out on the playoffs. Their Week 18 loss is what ironically welcomed the Steelers into the postseason picture.

The outside world doesn't understand the loyalty and love the Steelers faithful has for Cope's invention. It has allowed Pittsburgh's home stadium to be one of the most electric atmospheres in the league and makes it fairly simple for teams playing at home to know when their own fans may be outnumbered on their own turf. It remains one of the coolest symbols in all of sports.

Steelers Need More Than Fan Presence To Beat Bills

Buffalo is a better team than Pittsburgh is. No one is doubting that. However, the Steelers have found a way to make the offense click with Mason Rudolph leading the way and an upset on Sunday is not out of the question. There will be Terrible Towels waving in Orchard Park and Capaccio better hope he didn't bring the curse of them into Highmark Stadium.
