The Pittsburgh Steelers faced a challenging situation due to key injuries on the defensive side of the football in 2023. In response, they made strategic moves by signing Eric Rowe and Myles Jack to their practice squad, aiming to bolster their depth.

Jack and Rowe quickly made their presence felt on the field, contributing significantly to the Steelers' victories. Their remarkable efforts raised questions about whether they deserved more than just practice squad contracts.

Jack secured a one-year, $370,800 contract with the Steelers on November 20, 2023, showcasing his commitment to the team. Similarly, Rowe joined the Steelers' practice squad on the same date.

Steelers' Myles Jack (16) came out of retirement to help Pittsburgh fill voids on defense down the stretch of the 2023 season.

During their short tenures, Rowe accumulated 29 combined tackles and one interception, while Jack added 21 combined tackles and one sack. These numbers reflected their substantial roles in crucial moments during the Steelers' season.

On Monday, Tom Pelissero reported to confirm that both Rowe and Jack are now free agents, eligible to sign with other teams.

While it may seem unlikely that playoff-bound teams will pursue them, it remains a possibility. The Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions are the remaining four teams in the postseason. One of those teams could technically make a move to bolster their defensive depth and sign them on.

Cam Heyward, the revered veteran of the Steelers defense, expressed his bewilderment at how a talent as exceptional as Rowe ended up with the Steelers. Rowe's impressive performance has garnered praise from his fellow teammates, making him a player the Steelers would maybe prefer to retain on their roster.

Additionally, the Steelers themselves could make efforts to re-sign Rowe and Jack. However, it's important to note that the Steelers no longer possess exclusive negotiating rights, making the situation more intriguing.

Jack came out of retirement to aid his former team, the Steelers. Rowe stepped up admirably in a secondary plagued by injuries and the suspension of Damontae Kazee. Both Jack and Rowe helped the Steelers during the most pivotal moments of the season in securing three consecutive victories and making a playoff push.

While the future of Rowe and Jack in Pittsburgh may be uncertain, it's essential to acknowledge their significant contributions during a critical stretch of the season. Their dedication and impact on the Steelers' performance won't be forgotten. The coming weeks will reveal whether they remain a part of the Steelers' roster or find new opportunities elsewhere.
