The Pittsburgh Steelers' hunt for a new offensive coordinator is underway. The team recently announced that they want to interview Zac Robinson from the Los Angeles Rams. While fans are throwing out every name under the sun, most folks were just glad to hear the team is going outside of the organization. However, one of the most intriguing tidbits was dropped by an insider on a Pittsburgh radio station and it is a name that we haven't heard seriously mentioned before.

Peter King, of NBC Sports, recently joined The Cook & Joe Show on 93.7 The Fan. They asked him about the Steelers and the vacant offensive coordinator position, wondering who he thinks they are going to hire. The name he dropped? Kliff Kingsbury

King said that a lot of people really misunderstand Kingsbury. He has been behind some high-powered offenses and has worked with and developed dynamic quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Patrick Mahomes. This, according to King, has earned him respect as a passing game guru, but they are missing the big picture if you dismiss his abilities to call incredible run games.

The Steelers Need A Multi-Faceted Coach Like Kliff Kingsbury

The Steelers have always been considered a team that builds their offenses around the run. To hold true to that, they even drafted a running back in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Najee Harris. Pittsburgh prides itself in playing that AFC North style of smashmouth football. Kingsbury is the perfect guy for Pittsburgh according to King.

"I always tell people this about Kliff Kingsbury, you think you're meeting with a guy who wants to throw the ball 55 times a game. First meeting I ever had with him after he got the Cardinals job, he started talking about what a great running team we are going to be, before we are a great passing team and that year they were first or second in the NFL in rushing. You know, he has talked to the [Chicago] Bears and he's going to talk to the Steelers. Interesting places. You think, 'Wow, they're going rogue, they're going revolutionary!' The Bears are a running team, Steelers are a running team - you know Walter Payton, Jerome Bettis. I'll tell you this, if he gets one of these jobs, I guarantee you that that team will be a running team."

King added that just because Kingsbury understands the importance of a balanced offense and developing a strong run game, doesn't mean he doesn't know how to get the passing game going.

King reminded listeners that Kingsbury has developed some of the best quarterbacks out there. His approach has earned him the respect of the best in the business.

"That isn't to say he won't develop a quarterback, Mahomes loved him. A lot of people really respect him, he's a progressive thinker, he's really smart. Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, both those guys have infinite respect for Kingsbury as a play designer, play-caller, and developer of players."

This is certainly the first time Kingsbury has been mentioned regarding the Steelers. He seems to definitely fit the bill of someone who could breathe new life into a stale offense.
