The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2023 season was marked by quarterback drama, with ups and downs that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Kenny Pickett, in his second season, faced some challenges initially, but managed to secure some victories. However, during the season, there was a significant change as Matt Canada was let go from his offensive coordinator position.

Pickett delivered an impressive performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 12 before unfortunately getting injured against the Arizona Cardinals the very next week. Backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky was called in as a replacement, but faced difficulties on the field.

Eventually, Mason Rudolph took over the quarterback role after Trubisky's struggles and managed to build an impressive resume just before becoming a free agent. Rudolph's leadership led the Steelers to a remarkable three-game winning streak and secured them a spot in the postseason.

Steelers' Owner Art Rooney II Shares His Thoughts On Mitch Trubisky

In a recent interview with Rob King of Steelers.com, Team President and Owner Art Rooney II was asked about Trubisky's future with the Steelers. His response was stoic and left room for speculation.

"Mitch, we'll just have to see where we go with Mitch and the other spots that might be available," Rooney said.

The recent statements from Rooney might not exude overwhelming confidence in Trubisky's future with the Steelers. However, they don't entirely eliminate the possibility of Trubisky staying with the team. There's a scenario in which the Steelers opt to retain him simply to avoid the complexities of bringing in a new quarterback.

It's conceivable that the organization has a degree of comfort with Trubisky and a clear understanding of his capabilities. The real concern arises with Rudolph's impending free agency. If Rudolph and the Steelers fail to reach an agreement on a new contract, the team could find itself in a bind, potentially relying on Trubisky as one of their backup quarterbacks by default.

The situation underscores the delicate balance that the Steelers need to strike between their quarterback options, given the uncertainties surrounding both Trubisky and Rudolph's contractual situations.

On May 18, 2023, the Steelers made a significant move by signing Trubisky to a two-year contract extension valued at $11.25 million. This contract included a substantial $8 million guaranteed, a signing bonus, and his 2023 salary. Additionally, there's a notable 2024 roster bonus of $1 million scheduled to be paid in March of 2024. The Steelers could make a move to avoid this by moving on from Trubisky or not granting him the bonus. It's unlikely he will get that bonus.

This contract extension was met with mixed reactions among fans and football pundits alike. While some saw it as a positive step, others had reservations. The doubts surrounding Trubisky's ability to justify the 2024 roster bonus are primarily based on his inconsistent performance, his struggles in delivering in crucial moments, and a perceived lack of success in high-stakes games.

The Steelers now find themselves in a challenging predicament when it comes to managing their quarterback situation. With Rudolph's future with the team contingent on contract negotiations and the presence of Pickett, the team has a complex decision to make. Pickett, although showing some slight promise at times, has also exhibited inconsistency, making it a risky proposition to rely solely on him as the primary quarterback for the upcoming season.

As the Steelers navigate this intricate web of quarterback decisions, they must weigh the financial commitment made to Trubisky against his on-field performance. The uncertainty surrounding Trubisky's future with the Steelers adds a layer of complexity to their offseason planning. The choices they make regarding Rudolph and Pickett will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the team's fortunes in the coming season.

Steelers fans, known for their passionate support, will be keeping a close eye on the team's decision-making process. The future of the quarterback position is a topic of great interest and discussion, and the organization's choices will have a significant impact on the team's performance and the hopes of its dedicated fan base. Along with the quarterback decision, the Steelers will also be hiring a new offensive coordinator this offseason.

It's a busy, but exciting time for the Steelers. As their quest for their seventh Super Bowl depends vastly on the moves they make in the next couple of months.
