Matusz's journey to the Steelers began on the football field, where he captained Villanova's 2009 FCS National Championship team. Following his playing days, Matusz transitioned into coaching, starting with internships in Villanova's strength and conditioning program. 

His dedication and expertise caught the attention of Ohio State University, where he spent six years in various coaching roles, ultimately rising to the position of associate director of strength and conditioning. 

Matusz's ties to the Steelers run deeper than just geography, however. He had the privilege of coaching Dino Tomlin, son of Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, during his tenure at Boston College. Under Matusz's guidance, several athletes developed into NFL-caliber talents, with four players earning selections in the NFL Draft, including first-round picks Zion Johnson and Zay Flowers.
