The Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves embroiled in one of the most contentious incidents of the decade in the NFL. It all unfolded during a game against the Cleveland Browns, when Browns' defensive end, Myles Garrett forcefully removed the helmet of Steelers quarterback, Mason Rudolph, and swung it violently at him, sparking a heated altercation.

Cleveland Browns defensive end, Myles Garrett (95) hits Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Mason Rudolph (2) with his own helmet after an on-field scuffle.

This moment sent shockwaves through the audience, as witnessing a man of Garrett's stature wielding something as substantial as a helmet with full force towards another's face on national television was undeniably alarming. Such a display was unprecedented for Garrett, prompting speculation and stirring rumors about what Rudolph could have possibly said to incite such an outburst from him.

In the aftermath, Garrett claimed that Rudolph had directed a racial slur at him, sparking the rageful outburst. However, thorough investigations by both the Steelers and the NFL found no evidence to support Garrett's allegations. Despite the seriousness of the accusations, no corroborating witnesses emerged from either team.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Saved The Career Of Mason Rudolph

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin swiftly came to Rudolph's defense, vehemently refuting Garrett's claims. Tomlin emphasized the lack of support for Garrett's accusations from within the Browns organization and criticized the portrayal of the situation by media outlets.

"It was a thorough investigation done by us and the National Football League. I don't think that was represented during that piece. These accusations are serious, not only in terms of Mason Rudolph's character, but his professional pursuits. Nobody on that field as a member of the Cleveland Browns or the Pittsburgh Steelers corroborated what was said by Myles Garrett. That was founded by us and the National Football League and at no point during that piece this weekend that was stated."

Tomlin's unwavering support for Rudolph extended beyond mere words. He stood by Rudolph during the tumultuous aftermath of the incident, ensuring that the quarterback had the backing of the entire Steelers organization.

"I've got a lot of personal relationships within that organization over there in Cleveland. At no point did anyone within that organization come forward and say, 'Mike, heads up, we've got a situation here,' or something to that nature that you would expect that comes with those type of allegations. So, I fully support Mason Rudolph. We as an organization fully support Mason Rudolph. And to be quite honest with you, we were hacked off with what we saw this weekend. Not specifically from Myles Garrett, he's been in the lane that he's in, but what was displayed by ESPN in that panel. The way that the situation was presented, I don't think was fair to Mason Rudolph and that's why I'm here today."

ESPN's Brooke Pryor weighed in on Rudolph's future on the Two on OSU Podcast, highlighting Tomlin's pivotal role in salvaging Rudolph's career. Pryor underscored Tomlin's immediate dismissal of Garrett's allegations as crucial in preventing irreparable damage to Rudolph's professional reputation.

"I think that Mike Tomlin very much has had Mason's back through the Myles Garrett stuff coming out pretty immediately and saying that what was being alleged by Myles Garrett, that there was a racial slur that was used was not true. Rudolph's career could have tanked right then and there. He could have never had another shot in the NFL if the Steelers organization didn't stand behind him there."

The incident had the potential to derail Rudolph's career permanently. However, Tomlin's steadfast defense and the lack of evidence supporting Garrett's claims prevented catastrophic consequences for the young quarterback.

Despite the severity of Garrett's actions, the NFL's handling of the incident raised questions about its long-term impact on both players' careers. Rudolph, in particular, faced the risk of being unfairly branded due to unfounded allegations.

As Rudolph approaches free agency, his future with the Steelers remains uncertain. Speculation abounds regarding his potential departure from the team in pursuit of opportunities where he can vie for a starting role.

Tomlin's unwavering support for Rudolph amidst the fallout from the Garrett incident stands as a testament to his character and leadership. In a league often marred by controversy, Tomlin's actions exemplify the importance of standing by one's players in the face of adversity. As Rudolph's career trajectory unfolds, Tomlin's support may have proved to be the defining factor in shaping his future in the NFL.
