The Pittsburgh Steelers' journey with their star wide receiver, Diontae Johnson, has been both intriguing and challenging. At 27 years old, Johnson finds himself emerging from a turbulent 2023 season. Now it's quite possible he will be playing for another team in 2023.

During the NFL Combine, reports surfaced suggesting that the Steelers are open to the possibility of trading Johnson. However, their decision hinges on the potential value they can secure for the skilled, yet occasionally problematic wide receiver.
Although Johnson displayed his considerable talent on the field in 2023, a series of notable incidents arose that sparked concern among Steelers fans. One significant moment occurred when he failed to pursue a fumble recovery, citing an inability to see the ball. As the ball laid freely on the field, Johnson jogged off to the sideline. Additionally, he struggled to set a proper example in the locker room and failed as a leader. These occurrences raised questions about Johnson's consistency and effectiveness both on and off the field.
NFL insider Tony Pauline revealed that the Steelers are open to trading Johnson, contingent upon receiving a suitable offer. Pauline elaborated on his insights during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan's show, The PM Team w/Poni & Mueller.
"Well, it's basically what I said. I think they wish he was more of a leader on that offense, and he's in the final year of the deal they extended in 2022. If somebody comes up with the right compensation and they can move him now for draft picks, they'd rather do that than lose him next year when his contract is off and wait for whatever compensatory selections they may receive."
Pauline emphasized his commitment to the information he shared in his original report. While he stopped short of labeling Johnson as officially on the trade block, he acknowledged that there is a price at which the Steelers would consider parting ways with him.
"I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s on the trading block, but if somebody comes up with a good deal, they would definitely move him."
While almost every player in the NFL technically has a price, Johnson's circumstances and the concerns raised during his tenure in Pittsburgh may make him more susceptible to being traded. Pauline went on to reveal what he believes the price the Steelers would need to actually trade Johnson would be.
“I think they would move him for a third-round pick. I don’t think that they would take a day three selection to move him.”
In the 2023 season with the Steelers, Johnson showcased his prowess as a reliable target, securing 51 catches for a total of 717 receiving yards. His connection with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph was evident, finding the end zone five times. Johnson was targeted 87 times during the 2023 season, indicating his immense impact in the Steelers' offense.

Despite Johnson's undeniable talent and on-field performance, the Steelers have expressed a desire for greater consistency from the 27-year-old in his leadership role and presence within the locker room. While George Pickens has faced his own challenges, Johnson's actions have contributed to them. He's also done a poor job of helping lead Pickens and the rest of the team.
Steelers Making An Attempt To Fix Their WR Issues
The Steelers made a strategic move by appointing Zach Azzanni as their new wide receivers coach. Known for his no-nonsense approach and intolerance for negative attitudes, Azzanni is expected to instill discipline and accountability within the team.
