The Pittsburgh Steelers, on Sunday night right before morning hit, made waves in the football world by announcing the signing of former Denver Broncos quarterback, Russell Wilson to a one-year deal.

This move marks a significant shift in the Steelers' strategy, as they secure the talents of one of the league's most accomplished and dynamic quarterbacks. While Wilson signed a five-year, $242 million dollar contract just two seasons ago, his time with the Broncos didn’t go as planned. He went 11-19 as a starter for the Broncos in his two seasons as their quarterback.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Wilson as he aims to lead the Steelers back to championship contention. However, this move also makes it pretty obvious where the Steelers stand on Mason Rudolph.
Mark Kaboly, who covers the Steelers for The Athletic, shared some insight into a meeting Rudolph had with the Steelers on Sunday.
“Mason Rudolph's people met with the Steelers today and we know how that went. Never say never but something crazy would have to happen for Rudolph to return to the Steelers.”
Rudolph's departure from the meeting with a sense of dissatisfaction is interpreted by Kaboly as a potential indicator of his imminent exit from Pittsburgh. Throughout his entire professional journey, Rudolph has remained a member of the Steelers organization.
Steelers' Season Was Saved By Mason Rudolph
Rudolph’s pivotal role in replacing the struggling Mitch Trubisky in December of 2023 showcased his ability to step up under pressure. Rudolph's timely intervention before Christmas not only salvaged the Steelers' season, but also propelled them into the playoffs, underscoring his significance to the team.

Having spent his entire career with the Steelers, Rudolph's most recent contributions have been most noteworthy, particularly during critical moments such as his clutch performance that led to three straight wins in December. However, Kaboly's observation of Rudolph's discontent suggests a looming departure from Pittsburgh. As speculation mounts regarding Rudolph's future, his tenure with the Steelers will remain to be something of keen interest to NFL faithful.
As the NFL offseason looms, Rudolph finds himself at the center of speculation. With his tenure as the Steelers' backup quarterback and occasional starter, Rudolph has displayed flashes of potential, but also faced criticism. His impending free agency promises to be intriguing, as teams assess his value and potential as a starter or valuable backup. Meanwhile, Steeler Nation eagerly anticipates the team's moves in free agency, hoping to bolster areas of need and maintain their competitive edge. The offseason represents a pivotal time for both Rudolph and the Steelers, with significant implications for the team's future success.

With Kenny Pickett and Wilson in the quarterback room, the Steelers seem poised to explore different avenues in free agency, rather than committing significant resources to retaining Rudolph. Given the presence of promising young talent and the need to address other crucial areas of the roster, allocating a large portion of their budget to Rudolph may not align with the team's priorities. As they navigate the free agent market, the Steelers are likely to focus on addressing pressing needs across the roster, ensuring they maintain depth and competitiveness in all facets of the game.
