Top Steelers Trade Target For GM Omar Khan May Quickly Become Unavailable

It has been a wild tampering period for the Pittsburgh Steelers and General Manager Omar Khan. Slightly before it began, the front office executive and Head Coach Mike Tomlin lured quarterback Russell Wilson to the Steel City. A small handshake deal between the organization and punter Cameron Johnston followed on Monday, before everything went crazy on Tuesday. The team came to an agreement with Baltimore Ravens' linebacker Patrick Queen and also moved on from locker room distraction Diontae Johnson via trade with the Carolina Panthers. It was a busy day for Khan and co., and the phone won't stop ringing anytime soon.

In the trade for Johnson, Pittsburgh landed veteran cornerback Donte Jackson. With 14 interceptions throughout his six-year career, the Steelers are getting a solid option to put alongside Joey Porter Jr. It seems like more is coming, however. There are several positions to address, but Porter and Jackson might not be the top two cornerbacks once the 2024 season kicks off.

Khan is clearly set on revamping several positional groups. He also has the cap space to make another splash or two. He's proven that he doesn't operate the way the franchise does traditionally. Unfortunately, a top trade target in L'Jarius Sneed might be slipping away into another team's hands in the near future. The Kansas City Chiefs slapped Sneed with the franchise tag, but the cornerback is likely to wear a different uniform in 2024.

Whichever team, if any at all, ends up acquiring Sneed, will need to offer him a massive contract on top of giving the Chiefs draft compensation. The Tennessee Titans seem to be a strong suitor, as well as the Indianapolis Colts. Pittsburgh hasn't been mentioned too much, and deciding against trading Johnson to an in-conference threat like Kansas City may prevent the Chiefs' front office from being interested in doing business with Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh needs some help at safety as well, but won't go into 2024 with either Darius Rush or Cory Trice Jr. being in the top three at cornerback. The draft class is deep, but the Steelers' shocking lack of depth at some positions likely means that Khan and his team aren't done making significant moves. In regards to Sneed, information regarding what colors he will wear in 2024 could come sooner rather than later.

The Steelers are set in one area of the position with Porter. He had an incredible rookie season and the organization may have hit a home run at cornerback via the draft for the first time in years. Jackson is a great veteran to bring in to potentially take over the role that Patrick Peterson held in 2023, but a big splash like Sneed would make it a nightmare for opposing offenses. Especially the ones in the AFC North that all have incredible potential on the offensive side of the ball.

Steelers Are Sending All The Right Messages To The Fan Base In 2024 Offseason

Khan and the Steelers haven't been messing around. They released several players before the new league year began and already made three completely uncharacteristic moves. Adding Wilson and Queen were incredibly unexpected just a few weeks ago, while moving off from Johnson to leave just two 2023 contributors at the wide receiver position was equally as surprising. This is a business, and Khan is running it like one that is ready to get to the top of the mountain sooner rather than later.
