Sutton was drafted by the Steelers during the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of the University of Tennessee, along with his college teammate Josh Dobbs. He competed his rookie season for a spot against William Gay and Mike Hilton.

During his six years in the black and gold, Sutton proved to be a valuable asset. He even transitioned from an inside cornerback to an outside cornerback. He found opportunities early in his career to bounce around and capitalize upon injuries to teammates and he made the most of them.
The Steelers had hoped to retain Sutton, considering him a valuable member of the team. But during the COVID period, they had to add extra void years to player contracts as a way to defer paying them. With COVID decimating the coffers of many teams, including the Steelers, they were unable to strike a deal with Sutton that paid him what he wanted.

Sutton signed a three-year, $33 million contract with the Lions. During his career in the NFL, he has had 233 total tackles, 193 of them solo, two sacks, seven forced fumbles, and nine interceptions.
Steelers Have Enriched Their Cornerback Room This Offseason
After losing Sutton to the Lions, the Steelers were able to draft Joey Porter Jr. out of Penn State and sign veteran Patrick Peterson. While Peterson did not perform as well as he did earlier in his career, he supported the defense in multiple ways. Peterson took a kind of hybrid role on the team as part safety, part cornerback. He also acted as a mentor for the then-rookie Porter.
The Steelers chose to release Peterson this offseason and while he is hopeful that the door is still open, the team has gone another route. The Steelers recently traded for Donte Jackson. Jackson comes to Pittsburgh as part of a deal where they sent receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, along with a pick swap.
