The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing some pressing needs as they approach the upcoming draft, yet their draft position may compel them to make critical decisions. It's evident that the Steelers are in need of a wide receiver and a center, while also seeking to bolster their offensive line. Additionally, enhancing their cornerback position is a priority, especially after their promising acquisition of Joey Porter Jr. in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Investing in another young cornerback to complement Porter and fortify their secondary is crucial.

The Steelers' positional strategy for each round remains uncertain. At times, opting for the best available player is imperative, suggesting that the Steelers may postpone selecting a center and wide receiver until later rounds. In such a scenario, prioritizing an offensive tackle becomes a possibility. Former Steelers' defender Bryant McFadden recently speculated on the Steelers' potential course of action with the 20th overall pick.

McFadden offered his insights while appearing on the With The First Pick podcast with hosts Ryan Wilson and Rick Spielman. During his appearance, he responded to a question regarding the Steelers' course of action should Terrion Arnold and Quinyon Mitchell remain available in the draft when they are picking.

"If either one of those guys are there at 20, there's nothing to think about. If either one of those guys are there for Pittsburgh at 20, we go get one of those guys, whoever is available."

McFadden emphasized his skepticism about Mitchell or Arnold being available when the Steelers make their pick. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of draft night, where unexpected player falls can occur. If either of these skilled cornerbacks were to unexpectedly drop to the 20th pick, McFadden firmly believes that the Steelers would be remiss not to select them.

"Terrion or Quinyon, we running to the podium, the first-round selection for Pittsburgh, you're taking one of these corners. And you figure out the center situation or the tackle situation later on."

McFadden, who played defensive back for the Steelers for six seasons, possesses a keen eye for cornerback talent. There's no denying the promise these two prospects hold. However, the issue arises when considering the Steelers' more urgent needs. Opting to wait and hope that the desired center is still available in the second round could prove to be a riskier gamble. Additionally, they must secure a wide receiver capable of stepping in and starting as a rookie. The pressure is undoubtedly high on this draft, and the Steelers cannot afford to misstep.

Should either of these players be available at the 20th pick, it would present an exciting scenario for the Steelers, given their high regard as prospects. Mitchell, hailing from Toledo, boasts an impressive track record, having not allowed a single touchdown as the nearest defender in coverage throughout 2023. Over his four college seasons, he accumulated 46 pass breakups, earning him the 13th spot on Mel Kiper Jr.'s big board.

Arnold is equally captivating as a prospect. Kiper ranks him 19th overall. His performance at Alabama in 2023 was notable, tallying 40 total tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble, and 12 passes defensed. Known as a shutdown corner for the Crimson Tide, he permitted only four receptions above 20 yards that season. Many anticipate him to excel at the professional level.

Steelers Shouldn't Take A Cornerback In Round One According To Rick Spielman

Spielman held a differing perspective from McFadden's assessment. He contends that the Steelers' primary concern lies in protecting their quarterback, emphasizing the need to bolster the trenches with a draft pick. In Spielman's view, the defensive aspect of the team is solid, while the real issues stem from the offensive side, particularly the offensive line.

Regardless of the direction the Steelers ultimately choose in the first round, there will inevitably be some discontent among fans. Nonetheless, Steeler Nation eagerly anticipates the draft, awaiting the revelation of new talent poised to elevate their team's performance. As the draft draws near, excitement builds among football enthusiasts, fueled by a constant stream of rumors, reports, and news updates.
