The Pittsburgh Steelers are on a magical run in the 2024 NFL Draft. After bolstering the offensive line by selecting Troy Fautanu from Washington and Zach Frazier from West Virginia, Omar Khan and Andy Weidl maintained their focus on the offensive side of the ball and drafted a wide receiver for the first time in their very successful partnership. The dynamic duo picked Roman Wilson, the best wide receiver from the Michigan Wolverines, with the 84th pick in the draft.

Arthur Smith, the Steelers' new offensive coordinator, met with members of the press shortly after the selection and revealed that Wilson's on-field production and his demeanor impressed the organization.

"To add Roman Wilson, another really high character football player, a lot of production last year at Michigan, it was really fun being at that Michigan Pro Day, getting a chance to go to dinner with all those guys with Mike [Tomlin] and be a part of that process. Really, really impressed on the football field, but off the field as well. Fired up to get a chance to work with Roman."

Wilson was the best and most productive wide receiver in a run-first offense at Michigan in 2023 and should fit in perfectly in Smith's offense. Pro Football Focus identified him as a perfect Day 2 fit for the Steelers, and one unidentified NFC scout suggested he would be much more productive in the NFL than he was in college.

Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson was a stand out for the Wolverines that could be a consistent presence for the Steelers in the passing game.

Smith was asked to clarify what impressed him most, and he suggested that the Michigan wide receiver stood out in a room full of champions, which is not easy to do.

"The competitiveness, you could see his instincts on tape," Smith explained. "I thought he stepped up in the big moments. He had a great energy about him when I met him in person. Just being a part of a lot of people at dinner. You could see why they won the National Championship, and it's a credit to a lot of those players and that staff. We're just really excited to add that kind of value and experience as a rookie to that receiver room."

Wilson has his work cut out for him, but based on his championship pedigree and sure hands, he has an excellent chance to join third-year wide receiver George Pickens in the Steelers' starting lineup in 2024.

Steelers 2024 Draft Plan Is Unfolding Better Than Expected

Khan and Weidl filled three key needs on their first three picks. The Steelers needed to find a tackle, center, wide receiver, and cornerback in the 2024 draft class, and the dynamic duo is putting on a second consecutive master class on how to fill out a roster.
