There are countless legendary moments in the Pittsburgh Steelers' storied history. The Immaculate Reception likely takes the cake for most incredible and improbable play, but that wasn't one that led to a Super Bowl victory. Two of the greatest things to ever occur in the history of the franchise happened in the same game in February of 2009. Santonio Holmes had an unforgettable game-winning catch versus the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, but it was only possible because of James Harrison's pick-six at the end of the first half. It is a play that will never be forgotten.

Fans will forever be grateful for the 2008 AP Defensive Player of the Year's game-altering interception. Harrison is one of the main reasons the Steelers were able to capture a sixth Super Bowl Title. Harrison, or as many know him, Deebo, had a legendary career and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. He certainly contributed to rule changes in the NFL, as he never was afraid to pop somebody on the field.
Harrison sat down with Rob King in an interview released by the team's official website and the two talked about a plethora of topics dating back to his younger days. King asked the retired linebacker how he got the nickname Deebo. For those not familiar with the story, he went into simple detail of how everyone thought of him as a bully with the pads on.
"It was from a character on Friday. It's the bully, so they considered me to be a bully on the football field, so that's how. I had a bunch of nicknames. Pee-wees, I was Pitbull. I was Ja-bo, it's just an off throw of Deebo. That was before Deebo... I was two-day vet, Silverback."
While he discussed having several different nicknames, Deebo sticks out the most, due to the familiarity amongst the Steelers' fan base. Ben Roethlisberger mentioned not too long ago that he knows several quarterbacks who were terrified of Harrison. That's all the more reason for him being connected to a film's bully, to resonate with everyone who watched him play the game.

Harrison had a stellar professional career. He can certainly be labeled as one of the most successful undrafted free agents of all-time. Until TJ Watt broke his franchise sacks record in 2023, it remained intact. Harrison played in 193 regular season games, which resulted in 811 total tackles, 128 tackles for loss, 83.5 sacks, 34 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries and eight interceptions.
While his stat line is wildly impressive, future generations will be viewing videos of his hard hits for eternity. He was fined an absurd amount throughout his career and wasn't afraid to knock guys right on their behinds. He was absolutely a bully on the field and was a nightmare for any receivers or tight ends crossing over the middle of the playing surface on a quick slant.
He personified an on-field bully perfectly, which is why it makes so much sense that someone came up with his Deebo nickname. In the movie Friday, Deebo was the neighborhood bully. Think of that neighborhood as the entire professional football landscape, and Harrison being the one that no one wanted to see around the neighborhood.

Steelers Defenses Of The 2000s Not Complete Without Harrison
Names like Troy Polamalu, Casey Hampton, Ryan Clark, and many other come to mind during Pittsburgh's incredible stretch in the early-to-mid 2000s. One thing is for sure, however, without the bully in Harrison, the defense would not have been complete. The undrafted legend has an incredible story, and Deebo is the perfect nickname for a mean, hard-hitting Pittsburgh Steeler.
