The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in veteran Russell Wilson this offseason in an effort to fill the massive void at quarterback that has been holding the offense back since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement in 2022. Like Roethlisberger, Wilson carries a winning pedigree and offers an experienced presence in the locker room which is certainly a change of pace from Kenny Pickett. It has now been 10 years since Wilson hoisted the Lombardi Trophy with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013-14 season, but he doesn't seem to think that will be the last time he reaches the pinnacle of the sport.

Wilson struggled in his last two seasons with the Denver Broncos, so he will definitely have to prove that he can still be the quarterback he once was. However, if you ask Wilson, he'll tell you that he has a lot of good football left in him. Wilson's 2023 season looked bad from a distance due to the overall poor performance of the Broncos and their offense, but when you look at the numbers, he was a pretty productive quarterback. Was he just on a terrible team, or was he not making enough plays to win games? We won't have the answer to that question until the 2024 season when Wilson plays in a new city and the Broncos have a different face at quarterback. Perhaps, we could see that question answered in Week 2 when the Steelers go to Denver to play against the Broncos.

Wilson was interviewed by Prospect Media and after giving high praise to the city of Pittsburgh, he was asked if there's any dates he's looking forward to. You might think he'd say Week 1, or maybe his Broncos revenge game. Wilson didn't specifically mention either of those.

"All 17... plus three or four," Wilson answered.

Wilson's emphasis on "plus three or four" is a huge testament to his confidence in his ability to still play at the highest level. In the 10 Super Bowls Since he won Super Bowl XLVIII, the list of winning quarterbacks includes Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford and Nick Foles. Outside of Foles, those are some of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game of football.

The way the NFL has evolved, it's really hard to imagine a scenario where a team wins the Super Bowl behind lackluster or even average quarterback play. To take a team from the final Wild Card spot in the AFC in 2023, to a Super Bowl championship in 2024, isn't impossible, but Wilson will need to play like a top quarterback in the league in order to make it happen. That means going toe to toe with guys like Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow... and that's just to make it out of the AFC.

In February, Wilson told Brandon Marshall that he wants to win two more Super Bowls in the next five seasons. This interview came just a couple of weeks before he was cut by the Broncos and signed by the Steelers. Rumors were swirling at the time about his future in Denver, so he left it at "Whether it's in Denver or somewhere else."

The 2013-14 Seahawks team that Wilson won a Super Bowl with featured one of the most dominant defenses in recent memory. If the Steelers' defense can stay healthy and play up to the level they're capable of, Wilson will have no excuses.

He has an opportunity with the Steelers to revive his career, whether that's by winning a Super Bowl or not. This might be his last opportunity to open a season as a team's starting quarterback if things don't go well.

Steelers Quarterback Russell Wilson Wants Something He Hasn't Had In A Decade

If Wilson is the guy to bring the Steelers an NFL-leading seventh Super Bowl, his veteran minimum free agent contract may go down as one of the greatest free agent signings in NFL history. We won't know if he's capable of making that happen until the season starts, but Wilson sure thinks he is.
