The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially inked Mike Tomlin to a three-year extension, proving that they believe that he can end the playoff-win drought and lead the Steelers to where they truly want to go. With allegations of Art Rooney II being a cheap owner, there are questions about how much Tomlin is getting paid to stay in Pittsburgh. Is he paying top dollar for the longest tenured head coach in the NFL? Or is he making very little with the promise of constant job security?

While nothing is confirmed, Andrew Fillipponi has been told that Tomlin may be near the very top in terms of coaching salary with this latest extension.

Whether or not Steeler Nation agrees with Tomlin receiving a new deal, it makes sense that he keeps getting raises for every single contract extension. He still has plenty of accolades during his time in Pittsburgh, and he is undoubtedly the best coach in terms of motivating his players and making sure that the sky is never falling.

Obviously, the highest coaching paycheck should go to the most successful head coach, and Andy Reid has helped to lead a dynasty during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs. As long as Reid keeps doing what he's been doing, there is no current coach that will be able to overtake him in terms of both success and money.

Steelers Will Deal With The Endless Mike Tomlin Debate

As everyone already knows, Tomlin has never had a losing season. Even after the Steelers were defeated in Super Bowl XLV, lost some major pieces, and dealt with former superstars going through a hard regression, they continued to be a good team throughout the early 2010s, and they did make it back to the playoffs eventually. They even had four straight playoff appearances, with three playoff wins in that span.

There was even 2019, when an underdeveloped project in Mason Rudolph was forced to start, as well as an undrafted rookie in Devlin "Duck" Hodges. Despite not having their Hall of Fame quarterback, the Steelers still managed to squeak out eight wins. They were still competitive when everything seemed to be the worst.

However, two of the Steelers' three most recent playoff wins were against backup quarterbacks. Since then, whenever they did make the playoffs, they were routinely blown out in their first game. They even got embarrassed in the playoffs by a team without their head coach and offensive coordinator. The Steelers' standard of excellence has seemingly turned into the standard of mediocrity.

While Tomlin has all the stats and a previous Lombardi Trophy, there are still questions on if he should be right behind arguably the best coach in the NFL currently. Money can't buy playoff wins, and everyone is waiting for Tomlin to win his first playoff game since the Steelers field goal'd Reid's Chiefs to death in the 2016 postseason.

The debates will not end unless Tomlin either leads the Steelers back to the Super Bowl, or the team finally has a truly bad season. For now, the Steelers' executives are happy with keeping him and he is happy to stay, but when will the playoff failures and the mediocrity finally get to either of them? Only time will tell, and that's if the Steelers continue on the same path that they have been on for the last seven seasons.

What do you think about Mike Tomlin potentially having the second-highest coaching salary in the NFL? Is it deserved? Let us know in the comments.
