The Pittsburgh Steelers have received attention this offseason for their bold moves. They made news again recently when they put the questions about Head Coach Mike Tomlin's future in Pittsburgh to bed with a three-year extension. While the organization has not confirmed the amount Tomlin will be paid, the rumor mill says this extension makes him the second highest-paid coach in the league at roughly $19-20 million.

Once the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl, Tomlin has become a polarizing figure in Pittsburgh. The narrative regarding his no-losing season record has worn thin. Many are frustrated that Tomlin has not led the Steelers to a playoff win since the 2016 season.
Despite the postseason struggles, it is hard to dispute that Tomlin has been successful in Pittsburgh. He has led the team to seven AFC North titles and won one of two Super Bowl appearences. His regular season record is 173-100-2, and those 173 wins are second among active head coaches in the league.
On the 93.7 The Fan Morning Show, sports director, Jeff Hawthorn joined hosts Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson to discuss Tomlin's extension. Hawthorn said that everyone knew this was coming. No one expected the team to let Tomlin walk away. Team President Art Rooney II has told the media that they are very happy with Tomlin and his work with the team.
"I respect Mike Tomlin. I think he's a good NFL head coach. They didn't win a playoff game. It's not all on him. So I don't know if you give him a three-year contract to get the guys rallied behind him. If he wins this year, then you reward him with a contract; if he doesn't, they have another year where they're not in the playoffs," said Hawthorn."
Dickerson pointed out that on the show, they frequently debate Tomlin with each other and various guests. They see him for who he is—a consistent coach who isn't going to "bottom out," but they question whether or not he's earned a three-year extension.
"I don't think he's earned three years. I think he's earned this year with a new coordinator, new quarterbacks, another opportunity," added Hawthorn. "I think he's earned this chance to show, 'Hey, I could go find a new coordinator. We can make this work. This offense can be better and doesn't have to be so conservative.' I say we because it's a team thing with him and Omar [Khan], and obviously, Art [Rooney II] is overseeing all of it. But when does consistency become complacency?"
Crowley agreed, saying that in prior discussions, they felt the team should have had Tomlin "sing for his supper" in 2024. However, they also worry that it creates a kind of "lame duck" situation with no deal in place.

Hawthorn said he could support a situation where they took some power away from Tomlin. If the issue is his past hires, someone else should oversee those and help the team get back on track. He pointed out the comments made by players like Najee Harris about team discipline and accountability, wondering if Arthur Smith can change that.
