The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted wide receiver James Washington in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. There was considerable excitement in Pittsburgh about Washington teaming up with his former college teammate, Mason Rudolph, who was selected in the third round of the same draft. Rudolph was drafted to be the backup to Ben Roethlisberger. During Washington's four seasons with the Steelers, Washington caught 114 receptions for 1,629 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

Washington had a stellar college career at Oklahoma State, leading many to expect a more successful NFL career. After his rookie contract with the Steelers ended, he joined the Dallas Cowboys but suffered an injury, appearing in just two games as a backup. Following his release from the Cowboys, he spent time on various practice squads.

ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler revealed on social media Wednesday night that Washington is attempting an NFL comeback. He has been dealing with a Jones fracture over the past two seasons. However, he appears healthy and is ready to get back to the league.

Washington entered the NFL amid much excitement but struggled to fully live up to those expectations. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, he had some notable big play moments, yet consistency eluded him.

This offseason, the Steelers' wide receiver room has been a significant focus, especially after the decision to trade away Diontae Johnson. Pittsburgh has made upgrades across nearly every position, but the wide receiver group has been a particular concern. Many Steelers fans are worried about Pittsburgh's wide receiver room.

According to Fowler, teams are interested in seeing Washington try out. The possibility of the Steelers reaching out is not off the table. To address their needs at receiver, the Steelers have brought in Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, and Scotty Miller. Additionally, they drafted wide receiver Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Steelers' James Washington Could Be An Option At Wide Receiver For The Steelers

Given Washington's history in Pittsburgh and the team's current needs, bringing back a familiar wide receiver could make some sense. The Steelers now have considerable depth at the wide receiver position. However, Washington showed glimpses of potential during his time in Pittsburgh. His struggle to establish himself ultimately led to the Steelers moving on from him. If he is fully healthy, though, he might be a viable option for the Steelers to consider, offering a blend of experience and familiarity that could benefit the team's revamped receiving corps.

The Steelers' wide receiver room is set to dominate headlines throughout this offseason, captivating fans and analysts alike. With a new offensive system in place, there is a palpable sense of excitement among Steelers supporters, who eagerly anticipate a significant improvement on the offensive side of the football for the 2024 season.

While adding Washington might not drastically alter the team's dynamics, it would nonetheless offer the Steelers another reunion and a wide receiver with whom they are already familiar. Steelers fans will be closely monitoring Washington's efforts to make a comeback to the NFL, as his return could bring an additional layer of depth and experience to the team.
