Steelers Have No Big Plans To Implement A Package For Justin Fields: "I Don't Believe It"

The Pittsburgh Steelers' revamped quarterback room has been a hot topic ever since the organization acquired both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Although Wilson is the presumed starter, fans are fairly split between who they want to see take the field in Week 1. Wilson is the better and safer option for the time being, but many want to see the Steelers develop Fields and see if he could become the franchise quarterback. Wilson is simply too old to be a team's franchise guy of the future, while Fields is just 25.

Fields isn't expected to play much for the Steelers in 2024, but fans are hopeful to see flashes of him in certain packages drawn up to showcase his athleticism. He is one of the best athletes at the quarterback position, and would be a dynamic weapon for Pittsburgh if they allow him to be. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly was on 93.7 The Fan this week, and he was asked about whether or not Fields will have a package of plays drawn up for him.

"Until I see it, I don't believe it. I haven't seen anything that would suggest that right now. I think Russell Wilson is pretty good in situation at the goal line, in the red zone, and you don't want to turn the ball over there, and that's the biggest issue with Fields and the biggest thing the Steelers want to avoid this year."

Oftentimes, gadget plays and special personnel groups are thrown on the field down by the end zone. This is seen with the New Orleans Saints and Taysom Hill, and other teams who will like to use a bit of trickery to finish the job on a drive. Kaboly attended all of Pittsburgh minicamp practices and organized team activities, and he hasn't seen a thing that makes him believe the Steelers want to use Fields in that way.

During Kaboly's appearance on the radio, he was also asked if he believes Fields will have more or less than 4.5 touches per game. The insider quickly said less, and suggested Fields will have less than 1.5 touches per game. This would be a mistake by the Steelers and Arthur Smith. The fourth-year quarterback may need to develop as a passer, but he has eclipsed over 2,000 yards rushing in his short career.

National media figures have said the opposite of Kaboly. But, just because Kaboly hasn't seen anything to suggest a special package for Fields, doesn't mean it won't happen. When the Steelers were on the field during the spring, they weren't even wearing pads. It was just players getting to know new faces, and knocking the rust off. Smith was installing the basics of his offense, which is new to Pittsburgh.

The most important part of the offseason is coming up, as players report to Latrobe, PA on July 24th for training camp. During that time is when it can start to be pieced together what this team is really trying to do. If Fields doesn't have any packages or designed plays for him in Latrobe, the coaching staff could always put some in on a week-to-week basis during the season.

Steelers' Justin Fields Probably Won't See Any Time As A Starter

Fields is more of a project for the Steelers, while Wilson is an established veteran who is looking to revive his career. Both are playing on contracts that will expire following the 2024 season, which will present an interesting decision for the front office. Pittsburgh is an organization that values loyalty and commitment, which means if Wilson struggles a bit to begin the year, it is unlikely Head Coach Mike Tomlin will move on from him quickly.

This puts Fields in an interesting spot, as his only chances to prove to the organization what he can do is in limited reps in practice and if he ever sees the field. Fans want Fields to be the long-term answer at quarterback, but it's hard to imagine he gets the chance to do so in 2024.
