The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted wide receiver George Pickens in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Since then, Pickens has played in 34 games for Pittsburgh, amassing 115 catches, 1,941 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns. He has averaged an impressive 16.9 yards per reception, proving to be a valuable addition to the Steelers' receiving corps. Despite the team's historically poor offensive performance, Pickens stood out, and many experts believe he is poised for a breakout season as Pittsburgh's top wide receiver for the first time in his career.

But Pickens' contributions go beyond his receiving skills. He is also known for delivering devastating blocks for his teammates when he's not catching passes. His blocking prowess has led some to draw comparisons between him and the legendary team player Hines Ward during the 2023 season.
Steelers insider Brian Batko was recently asked about wide receiver Van Jefferson and his blocking ability. Jefferson, the son of wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, has clearly benefited from his father's coaching. However, Batko still considers Pickens to be the best blocking receiver on the Steelers roster.
"George Pickens is the best blocker when he wants to be," said Batko. "He has the requisite frame, length and attitude for it, no doubt. You've probably seen some of the highlights."
While Pickens was initially praised for his blocking early in the season, one incident sparked significant controversy within the organization. During a play where Steelers running back Jaylen Warren was advancing on a potential scoring run, Pickens was notably unengaged, failing to block and create a path for his teammate.

This lack of effort infuriated many fans, who accused Pickens of being entitled and selfish. When Pickens addressed the media, his explanation—that he avoided blocking to prevent injury—only fueled the backlash. In response to the uproar, Head Coach Mike Tomlin held an additional press conference to help settle down the drama.

Batko notes that, besides Pickens, wide receivers Jefferson and the recently drafted Roman Wilson are also recognized for their physicality and strong blocking skills. Jefferson, who has benefited from his father’s coaching, demonstrates excellent technique and an understanding of the importance of blocking. Wilson, known for his standout college career, made a name for himself not just as a star receiver but also for his physical play and willingness to get his hands dirty.
“But as far as being assignment-sound and technique-oriented and all that, yeah, I'd think the son [Jefferson] of a longtime NFL receivers coach would be the best. Roman Wilson seems to have the appetite for it too, but the physicality will be an adjustment from the Big Ten to the pros.”
The Steelers selected Wilson to address concerns about their wide receiver group. Wilson is expected to play a significant role as a rookie, bringing his physicality and strong blocking skills from college to the NFL.
However, Batko has expressed some reservations about how well Wilson will adjust to the increased physicality of professional play. Despite this, Wilson is an exciting addition who aligns perfectly with the Steelers' needs in a receiver.
Steelers Are Hopeful For A More Positive Season With George Pickens
As for Pickens, his attitude and effort were questioned earlier in the season. However, he showed improvement towards the end of the year.
