Steelers' Russell Wilson stands at the podium as he takes questions from the Pittsburgh media.
This offseason, the Steelers went a little away from their distinct approach by signing veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum. Wilson, who spent most of his NFL career excelling with the Seattle Seahawks, struggled during his two seasons with the Denver Broncos.

Now with the Steelers, Wilson is eager to demonstrate that he can still play at an elite level and help restore the team to its former glory. As players reported to training camp on Wednesday, Wilson spoke to the media and drew a comparison between the Steelers organization and the iconic MLB team, the New York Yankees.
“It’s the high character of the guys we have. I mean it is just an organizational thing. I noticed that when I was with the Yankees actually in spring training. Being around those guys, it was an organizational thing. The championships, the mentality and I believe that the Pittsburgh Steelers is an organizational thing. The character of the men that we have.”
Wilson compared his brief time with the Steelers to his experience with the Yankees during spring training. Wilson, a standout baseball player as well as a quarterback, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 41st round out of high school. He played college baseball and was then selected in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies.
Wilson informed the Rockies that he would pursue a career in the NFL and would not report to spring training for the 2012 season. In December 2013, he was picked up by the Texas Rangers and attended spring training with them in 2014 and 2015.

In 2018, Wilson was traded to the Yankees, where he pinch-hit for Aaron Judge on March 2nd of that same year. Although he struck out, it was a notable moment to see an NFL quarterback in a professional baseball game.

Wilson's NFL career has been remarkable, and he remains a great athlete. Had he pursued baseball more seriously, he likely would have had a successful career in the MLB. However, his NFL success suggests he made the right choice, and he could be on the path to the Hall of Fame. His performance with the Steelers will likely influence his Hall of Fame candidacy.
Steelers And Yankees Share Similar Challenges As Of Late
Comparing the Steelers to the Yankees is an intriguing analogy. Both franchises are known for their professionalism and success. While the Yankees have won 27 World Series titles, they, like the Steelers, have recently struggled to return to their former glory.
