Steelers Quarterback Justin Fields Has His Best Day Of Training Camp So Far On Day 4

The Pittsburgh Steelers opened training camp on July 25th in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. A lot of fans' attention was set to be focused on the quarterback competition between Russell Wilson and Justin FieldsHowever, Wilson has been dealing with a calf injury that he suffered pushing a sled during a conditioning workout on reporting day. Wilson's minor injury has kept him out of team reps and pushed Fields into more first-team reps than initially expected. Wilson has yet to practice with a helmet on through four days of training camp which has created a big opportunity for Fields to make his case for the team's starting quarterback job.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has said all offseason that Wilson is in pole-position to start Week 1 under center for Pittsburgh. Fields won't make it an easy decision for Tomlin and Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith to start Wilson, but he'll have to make some serious noise in camp to win the job.

Through the first three days of training camp, the Steelers' defense outshined the offense in Latrobe. This is somewhat expected considering the amount of talent on Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin's unit, but the expectation for the team's offense is higher than the last couple of seasons.

The first three days of poor offensive production can be chalked up to working through the kinks of a new offensive scheme or the absence of the team's presumed starting quarterback, but in order for Fields to win the job, the offense would need to improve. On Sunday, the fourth practice of training camp and the last before padded practices begin, Pittsburgh's offense started to click. Christopher Carter posted the results from Sunday's "seven shots" period.

Overall, the offense won 5-2 over the defense in seven shots. That was the first offensive seven shots win of training camp so far and it was close to being a 6-1 victory before a Fields bootleg touchdown pass was ultimately ruled a sack.

Fields is as exciting as they come at quarterback. If he can start stacking good days, the rest of training camp will be must-watch.

Steelers Quarterback Justin Fields Needs To Use This Opportunity To Show Consistency

Fields is arguably one of the most talented players in the entire NFL. He showed flashes of becoming a franchise quarterback in his time with the Chicago Bears, but he just seemed to lack the consistency the Bears needed at quarterback. Some of Fields' inconsistency has carried over into training camp, but it's his offseason with a new team in a new offense so he can't be expected to be perfect right away.

Fields made some great plays and had a much better day, but the inconsistency will need to level out eventually.

Wilson should be healthy enough to practice in the first week of padded practices, so Fields will more than likely see less reps with the first team. Hopefully Fields did enough with his opportunity to show that he can compete with Wilson.
