The Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receiver group has been a major topic of concern all offseason. The team drafted wide receiver Roman Wilson, hoping he could make an immediate impact as a rookie. Steelers fans got some bad news on Tuesday about their rookie wide receiver.

On Tuesday, during a training camp session where players were in full pads, Wilson was tackled by Anthony Averett during the seven shots drill. Reports indicate that Wilson landed awkwardly after taking a jet sweep handoff and was subsequently carted off the field.

This injury is still developing, and fans are hopeful it's not serious. Wilson had been impressing pundits during camp, with many believing he had a real chance to be the Steelers' number two receiver behind George Pickens. This offseason, Pittsburgh decided to trade away their star wide receiver Diontae Johnson.
Wilson was expected to come in as a rookie and be relied on heavily. If he does have some type of injury that forces him to miss any time. It's going to be difficult for him to make up ground. As a rookie, the Steelers need to get Wilson as comfortable as possible for the role they want him to play. Hopefully the Steelers are just being extra careful with him and he will be ok.
Steelers Hopeful Roman Wilson's Injury Isn't Serious
Being carted off is standard procedure, regardless of the injury's severity, due to the distance from the field to medical facilities. It doesn't necessarily indicate a serious injury. However, losing Wilson would be a blow to an already concerning wide receiver corps. Steelers fans are anxiously awaiting updates, hoping Wilson's injury is minor and just a quick scare.

The Athletic
Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson makes an athletic catch during training camp.
Wilson was drafted by the Steelers 84th overall and embodies the qualities the team values in a player. He's a selfless athlete who thrived in a run-heavy system at Michigan, making his presence felt despite the offense not being receiver-friendly. In the 2023 season, Wilson recorded 48 receptions for 789 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. Known for putting the team first, Wilson is also enthusiastic about contributing in the blocking game.
His potential absence due to injury is a significant blow to the Steelers, who were already concerned about their wide receiver corps. The severity of Wilson's injury is still unknown, but any missed time in camp could hinder his development and integration into the team. The Steelers have been rumored to be in the market for another wide receiver, and this new development may accelerate their search.
