The Pittsburgh Steelers had their first padded practice of the offseason on Tuesday. A major concern has been the absence of new quarterback Russell Wilson, who missed the first four practices due to a sore calf. However, Wilson was back in full pads and participated in practice on Tuesday.

Wilson reportedly injured his calf during the team's conditioning test last Wednesday when players reported to camp. Steelers fans present at Tuesday's practice were relieved to see him back on the field. Observers noted that Wilson looked sharp, completing all seven of his passes in his first seven-on-seven drill, including a deep pass to tight end Connor Heyward.

After practice, Wilson spoke with Chris Adamski and other Pittsburgh media members. He was asked about his recovery from the calf ailment and how he felt returning to practice.

“I feel good. Getting better every day and the training staff is doing a tremendous job. We are working really hard every morning. It’s just good to be back out here with the guys putting the helmet on.”

Wilson was particularly excited to get his helmet back on. There's been a lot of buzz about the Steelers' new quarterback room throughout the 2024 offseason. The Steelers not only brought in Wilson, but also traded for another quarterback, Justin Fields

While Wilson currently holds the starting position, Fields will have an opportunity to compete for the job. Wilson understands the importance of practicing and demonstrating to the coaching staff why he should be the starter. He can't afford to lose any ground to Fields.

“Really getting the work in today. Getting all the quarterback drills and all the fundamental work. Some of the handoffs and just being in with the fellas. It’s always the best part. It was a good day today for sure.”

Wilson was asked if it bothered him to be on a bit of a pitch count during Tuesday's practice. He responded that he was unfazed, and confident in his ability to absorb the playbook and strategies, whether practicing or observing. He trusts his intellect and learning ability in any situation. Wilson has shown his veteran experience by handling his limited practice time like a true professional.

“No it’s good I mean I am watching every rep and watching everything if I am not in there. Also getting the reps today was really good for me. To be able to do seven on seven and be in the mix. That was the plan the whole time and just to be able to get as many reps on seven on seven as I could. It was really good stuff today.”

Wilson's return to the field is promising news for the Steelers. After a stellar career with the Seattle Seahawks and two challenging seasons with the Denver Broncos, Wilson is confident in his ability to return to his former elite level of play. He has heard all the memes made about his time with the Broncos. Wilson has handled the negative media about him like a pro. However, he's certainly ready to remind NFL fans why he's a nine-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion.

Steelers' Russell Wilson And Justin Fields Will Force Make Each Other Better

The Steelers have struggled with poor offensive performance and subpar quarterback play in recent years. The addition of Wilson, along with the trade for Fields, is expected to significantly improve Pittsburgh’s offense and set them up for success.
