Steelers Landing Big Star DK Metcalf Nothing More Than "Chatter" Right Now

The Pittsburgh Steelers have kicked off their training camp and watching NFL football games is right around the corner again. With the season so close, there are still questions about the Steelers' roster that has all of Steeler Nation waiting on the edge of their seat seeing if anything will happen.

Steelers Omar Khan Mike Tomlin

Omar Khan and company have been celebrated by members of the media and the fans based on the moves that they have made throughout the last two years, along with appearing to have knocked the last two NFL Drafts out of the park. There is still one move everyone is waiting for though, and that is landing one of the premier wide receivers that have been talked about as potentially available for trade.

One of those wide receivers that have had their name thrown around in potential rumors is D.K. Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks. The Steelers are obviously connected to many of these rumors as Metcalf's quarterback to start his NFL career was none other than Russell Wilson, who is projected to take the first snaps under center in Week 1 for the Steelers.

Pittsburgh Steelers Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson and DK Metcalf were teammates in Seattle from 2019-2021.

Despite the quarterback-wide receiver connection between Wilson and Metcalf, it doesn't appear there is much backing up the claims that Metcalf could see himself sporting the Black and Gold, or any new team's colors, any time soon.

During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, NFL insider Mike Florio discussed if he was hearing anything about Metcalf being on his way out of Seattle or not. Unfortunately for the Steelers, this doesn't appear to be very likely at this point in time.

"I haven't heard anything about it beyond chatter, and Russell Wilson and DK Metcalf working out. A lot of people will read tea leaves based upon the things that players from different teams do when they're in their down time. But hell, Russell Wilson may not be the quarterback of the team this year at this rate. So that's one fewer tea leaf that we can look, if that's ultimately the case. I can't rule out anything, but I haven't heard anything that would make me say, 'Uh oh, it looks like DK Metcalf is going to be a Steeler.'"

First off, regardless of how true the rumors were and how much they were likely just pumped up by fans wanting to land a star at wide receiver, it is deflating knowing one of the bigger names around the league at wide receiver is very likely not a realistic option at this point.

Steelers Justin Fields

Second, it is even more of an interesting point that a connection between the Wilson and Metcalf might be irrelevant at this point should Wilson not be able to secure the starting job this season. There was always a bit of wonder about what acquiring a former target of Wilson's would look like beyond the 2024 season since his outlook with the team is very much unknown, but the thought that it likely shouldn't play a role even for this upcoming season definitely throws a different wrinkle into things.

Steelers QB Justin Fields Already Appears To Be Earning Respect From The Rest Of The Offense

It caught a lot of people by surprise when Wilson wasn't taking the first reps in Latrobe this year, as that was the expectation with Mike Tomlin stating he was in the "pole position" all offseason. However, Justin Fields got that opportunity due to Wilson's calf injury. Despite a little bit of a shaky start to his first training camp with his new team, Fields has settled in nicely once the pads came on, and performing rather well.

Fields has a unique skill set where his legs are just as deadly, if not more, than his arm when he is on a football field. That was on full display when he gained yards during a play and was greeted by a harder bump than you would expect to a quarterback from Elandon Roberts. This led to a small brawl after some of the offense, namely young offensive linemen Mason McCormick and Troy Fautanu came to his defense. That level of support and willingness to stick their neck out on the line for you up against one of the top enforcers of the defense speaks volumes for both the level of respect the team has for Fields already, as well as the type of teammates McCormick and Fautanu are.

Let us know below what you think about the Steelers being unlikely to land Metcalf, which might be losing what little support the theory had if Wilson loses his starting spot.
