The Pittsburgh Steelers showcased their beloved Friday Night Lights tradition recently with Justin Fields stepping in at quarterback. Returning players are well-acquainted with the electric atmosphere of this event, but for newcomers like Fields and Wilson, it can be quite overwhelming. Fields, who has spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears before joining the Steelers, was particularly taken aback by the experience.

Despite his previous NFL experience, the intensity and excitement of Friday Night Lights left him genuinely amazed. The energy of the crowd and the tradition of the event made a significant impact on him, highlighting just how special this practice is for both players and fans.

"I really didn't know what to expect going into it, but when I tell you the atmosphere and when we were pulling up, I mean, it was surreal,” said Fields. “I mean, it was just fans everywhere. It felt like a state championship game, like a high school state championship game in Texas.”

Fields admitted that the Friday night practice under the lights was one of the top moments of his NFL career. He went on to elaborate on what made the experience so special for him.

“But it was crazy, fans everywhere, everybody loud, yelling. So, it was definitely an awesome experience, and I have to say one of the top experiences that l've had since I've been in the league."

The event saw 12,238 fans in attendance to watch the Steelers. The offense made a strong impression, largely dominating the defense. Pundits noted that running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren showcased the potential of the revamped offense. Harris and Warren had great 2023 seasons, but the offense was awful. After struggling during the 2023 season, the Steelers’ offense seems to be regaining its spark, and fans are beginning to get excited about the new look.

With Wilson still hampered by a a calf ailment, Fields has been taking the opportunity to impress the coaching staff. He threw for three touchdowns, demonstrating his capabilities. The Steelers also gave fullback Jack Colletto more reps, signaling a commitment to returning to a more physical, punishing style of football. This approach aligns with Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith’s clear intent to revive the Steel City’s hard-nosed football tradition.

The backs on backers drill generated excitement as the running backs effectively competed against the linebackers. Rookies are battling hard for starting positions before Week 1, and with many new faces and personnel changes, the Steelers are determined to address past issues.

Steelers' Justin Fields Continues To Take Advantage Of Extra Reps

While Fields relished playing under the lights for the Steelers fans, Wilson mentioned after practice that he's nearing full health. Although many believe Wilson is the likely starter, Fields is drawing attention with his dynamic play. Fields offers a younger, more exciting option, while Wilson is the proven, win-now choice.
