The Pittsburgh Steelers' offense was historically poor during the 2023 season, struggling significantly since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement. Under former Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada, the unit reached new lows, leading to his midseason dismissal—an unusual move for the Steelers, reflecting just how dire the situation was.

This offseason, the Steelers took decisive action by hiring Arthur Smith as the new offensive coordinator. Smith faces the challenge of revitalizing a struggling offense quickly. He'll have the support of new quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, and there's even speculation about the potential addition of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, with reports suggesting that a trade might be on the horizon.

Camp has been focused on revamping the offense, and despite a slow start, there's a growing sense of excitement. On Wednesday, during the seven shots drill, the offense impressed by dominating the defense, as noted by Steelers insider Mike DeFabo.

The seven shots drill is a high-energy practice exercise where the offense gets seven attempts to score from the two-yard line, while the defense tries to prevent them from doing so. Each defensive stop earns a point for the defense, and each offensive touchdown earns a point for the offense. In Wednesday's practice, the offense outperformed the defense with a score of 6-1. Quarterbacks Wilson and Fields each took three snaps, with Kyle Allen handling the final rep.

Wilson’s performance was mixed. He threw one incomplete pass intended for wide receiver Van Jefferson. However, he successfully handed the ball off twice for touchdowns, with Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren both finding the end zone. Fields showcased his versatility by first connecting with Calvin Austin III for a touchdown, threading the ball between defenders Damontae Kazee and Donte Jackson. He then scrambled for another score. Fields then handed the football off to La’Mical Perine, who also scored.

While the seven shots drill tends to favor the offense and should be viewed with some context, it remains a thrilling part of practice that fans eagerly anticipate. Despite the Steelers' offensive struggles throughout the 2023 season, the introduction of a new system under Smith is expected to bring significant improvements. Steelers fans are starting to get a glimpse of these improvements as camp continues.

As speculation swirls about a potential trade for Aiyuk, the current offensive performance is already fueling optimism among Steeler Nation. Adding Aiyuk to the roster would enhance the team’s receiving corps, creating a formidable duo with George Pickens that could pose significant challenges for opposing secondaries. A duo of Pickens and Aiyuk would be a nightmare matchup for defenses.

Steelers' Arthur Smith Wants The Offense To Punish Defenses In 2024

Smith has made it clear that he aims to restore a more physical style of play to the Steelers' offense. With the team's focus on a stronger, more aggressive approach and an improved offensive line, expectations are high for both Harris and Warren to have standout seasons in 2024.
