The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered another disappointing preseason loss, falling 9-3 to the Buffalo Bills. The offense struggled mightily, and Russell Wilson's performance was a major factor. This game marked the first chance for Steelers fans to see Wilson in action, but the excitement quickly waned as the offense faltered. It wasn't a great showing for Wilson.

Wilson completed 80% of his passes but only managed 47 yards. Meanwhile, Justin Fields provided some excitement when he entered late in the second half. Fields helped tie the game 3-3 with just two minutes remaining when he went in the game. Despite his impressive moments, he struggled in crucial situations and failed to lead a touchdown drive, leaving fans both hopeful and frustrated.

With only three points scored and both quarterbacks struggling, questions about their performance are inevitable. Mike Tomlin was asked to evaluate Wilson's play but avoided the question. Tomlin gave Wilson a pass because the offense couldn't get any momentum.

"Again it’s somewhat of an incomplete study because you don’t get to see us establish rhythm and personality when you are not winning possession downs. And we weren’t, you know the first three or so series of the game it was three and out. You aren’t going to get an opportunity to establish a rhythm or play the way that you would like as an individual or a collective."

Tomlin tried to excuse Wilson's inability to move the offense, attributing his struggles to the unit’s overall lack of rhythm. However, many would argue that the offense struggled to find momentum because of Wilson.

When asked about Fields' second performance, Tomlin offered a similar pass. However, he did acknowledge that Fields excelled as a runner.

"You know I thought he got better in some areas. I thought he did a nice job using his legs whether it was impromptu or otherwise to keep some situations alive but again I just thought the performance was stymied by lack of protection and lack of execution on possession down play."

Fields completed 11 of 17 passes for 92 yards and added excitement on the ground, leading the team with 42 rushing yards on eight carries. Despite his efforts, the offense once again struggled, giving Steelers fans flashbacks to the frustrations of the 2023 season.

While it’s only preseason, and fans and pundits will try not to overreact, there’s legitimate cause for concern when Pittsburgh manages just three points against the Bills’ JV defense. Steeler Nation really would have liked to see Fields lead at least one touchdown drive. However, since he didn't it makes it hard to be at ease with his performance.

Steelers' Offense Has Another Disappointing Performance Against Buffalo Bills

Wilson and Fields bring both excitement and skepticism to the Steel City. However, if the offense continues to perform as it did against Buffalo, Week 1 could be a nightmare. There’s still time to iron out the kinks and improve, and Fields certainly stole the spotlight with his dynamic plays and runs.

Wilson struggled, but as Tomlin pointed out, he didn’t have much of a chance to find his rhythm. It will be interesting to see how the national media reacts to this poor showing by the offense. While there were flashes of promise, the lack of execution ultimately overshadowed the bright moments.
