The Pittsburgh Steelers have a budding star at receiver in George Pickens. He has improved in each of the first two seasons of his NFL career, and is expected to take a big leap in his third season. Pittsburgh parted ways with Diontae Johnson during the 2024 offseason, which opens the door for Pickens' production to skyrocket. Pickens will also have the best quarterback play of his young career with Russell Wilson winning the starting job during the preseason.

Steelers wide receiver, George Pickens (#14) prepares to haul in a catch during a 2023 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

Pickens has already had some amazing highlight moments in his young career. He has shown up in a big way for the Steelers in games within the AFC North, and he was a big reason the Steelers were able to go 5-1 in division play during the 2023 season. He helped win a game against the Baltimore Ravens for the Steelers by hauling in a 41-yard touchdown with just over a minute to go. In a recent interview, Pickens was asked for his all-time dream teammates, and his choices might rub Pittsburgh fans the wrong way.

"My dream teammate would probably be Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers or Ed Reed, something like that. Yeah."

Pickens had the opportunity to pick from any player that has stepped foot on an NFL field, and he chose two guys that the majority of the Steelers fan base do not like. Ed Reed for obvious reasons, as he was one of the best defenders in the league while playing with the Ravens. Aaron Rodgers took down the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV, which cost the organization their seventh Lombardi Trophy.

Pickens and Rodgers would probably be an elite duo in today's NFL. Rodgers missed the majority of the 2023 season after suffering an Achilles injury in the season opener, but he will return to the field on Monday Night Football in Week 1 of the 2024 season. The quarterback is entering his 20th year in the NFL, but he hasn't really shown signs of slowing down. He won back-to-back Most Valuable Player Awards during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Reed is one of the best players to ever play defense in the NFL. There was the obvious rivalry between him and the Steelers since he was on the Ravens for the majority of his career. The safety was even more hated in Pittsburgh due to his positional rivalry with Steelers legend Troy Polamalu. The two were undoubtedly the best at their position, but a heated debate always took place about who was the better player.

Either way, the young receiver chose some of his favorite players to play the game, and fans could have seen a Rodgers-Pickens duo, but the New York Jets took Garrett Wilson instead during the 2022 NFL Draft.

Steelers' George Pickens Is Due For A Big Year In 2024

Pickens is by far the biggest threat in the passing game for the Steelers on offense. General Manager Omar Khan was in serious pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk, but that failed as the star inked a new deal with the San Francisco 49ers. This leaves Pickens as the only truly reliable pass-catcher in Pittsburgh's wide receiver room, and he should be able to take another leap in his third season.

He is entering his first season as the unquestioned number one receiver in Pittsburgh. His targets should rise, as should his overall production. If he stays healthy throughout the year, he could certainly have the potential to be an All-Pro.
