Even though the Pittsburgh Steelers are about to begin the 2024 season, their college scouts do not get a break. They will be traveling to numerous games throughout the college football season. It is only Week 2 at the collegiate level, but there is still a lot of good information to be found from watching certain games. In fact, many teams across the NFL are sending scouts to the same spot as the Steelers, as they all hope to get a good look at certain prospects.

There were 15 different teams that traveled to The Big House in Ann Arbor to watch the Michigan Wolverines host the Texas Longhorns. The Steelers were one of these teams, and they may have a certain player in mind.

A lot of NFL-caliber talent was expected to be shown in this game, including a player that would fit a need for the Steelers: Quinn Ewers, quarterback of Texas. In a draft class that is projected to be weak, Ewers is looking to prove himself as the easy favorite to be the top signal-caller selected in 2025, and that started with going to the biggest stadium in the country and putting on a show.

Even though Michigan lost a large chunk of its players and coaching staff (including Head Coach Jim Harbaugh), leaving Ann Arbor with a win is usually no easy task. There are still plenty of great players that will get drafted, but Ewers had no problem dissecting their defense. In the first half of the game, he went 18/26, 203 passing yards, and two touchdowns.
The only drive that Texas did not score on before halftime was a 51-yard drive that resulted in a missed field goal. Whether the defense kept Michigan from scoring or not, Ewers was able to lead his team to scores. He even completed a 49-second touchdown drive right before halftime after the Wolverines fumbled the ball near midfield. Texas ended the half with a commanding 24-3 lead.
Even with the defense doing its part to secure the win, Ewers made sure to not let up as the Longhorns get a dominant win on the road against a top 10 team. There will likely be plenty of questions on how good Michigan really is, but Texas will get more big tests soon enough, as they will have to face the Oklahoma Sooners and Georgia Bulldogs in back-to-back weeks. Many teams will send their scouts to those games, and the Steelers will most likely do the same.
Steelers Definitely Taking Notes On Ewers
No matter what happens in the 2024 season, quarterback will be a need in some form. Pittsburgh currently has no quarterbacks signed past the season. Even if Russell Wilson does well enough to earn another contract, the Steelers will still want a young quarterback waiting in the wings. Ewers could sit and develop behind a veteran for a year before getting his turn to light the league on fire.

Justin Fields still has a lot of work to do, but if he gets his chance and earns another year in Pittsburgh, the Steelers could still get Ewers as a guy that's more mechanically sound for a true quarterback competition. The team has previously talked about how Fields will be treated like a prospect, so getting him in a real competition will only help both him and any potential rookie he goes up against.
There's also the possibility that the Steelers may have to start from scratch and let everyone go. If that's the case, then there is no doubt that the Steelers will look to draft a quarterback, even if they sign a veteran. While that situation would not be ideal, that could be the easiest way for Ewers or any other rookie signal-caller to find their way to Pittsburgh. Either way, the Steelers desperately need to find someone to fill Ben Roethlisberger's shoes, and the 2025 draft may be the place to find it.
